An autonomous institute under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, NID is famous for offering design courses in Industrial, Communication, Textile, and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design.

Q:   How many candidates appear for NID DAT?

A:

There is no official notification on the number of applicants for NID DAT 2024.

However, as per unofficial sources, around 15,000 applicants appeared in the NID DAT 2024 (Prelims) exam. Note that only shortlisted candidates were eligible to appear in DAT Mains. The DAT Prelims was held on December 24, 2023.

If the National Institute of Design releases the exam statistics for the NID DAT exam, the details will be updated here. Note that the current session of the NIFT exam is conducted by the NTA. Now considering the NTA releases the exam stats, including the number of applicants registered, appeared, qualified - it is likely the details will also be released for the NIFT 2024 exam.

Q:   What is the criteria for MDes in NID Ahmedabad?

A:

The overall criteria for MDes in NID Ahmedabad is four year duration Bachelor degree in any specialisations from any recognised university or institution. NID Ahmedabad offers MDes programme at the postgraduate level that lasts for two and a half years. Admission 2024 is based on NID entrance exams. MDes is offered in 19 disciplines across all 3 campuses in the following departments: Faculty of Communication Design, Faculty of Industrial Design, Faculty of Interdisciplinary Design, Faculty of IT Integrated Design, and Faculty of Textile, Apparel, Lifestyle and Accessory Design. 

Q:   Can I join NID Ahmedabad directly?

A:

No, candidates cannot directly join NID Ahmedabad for any program, including undergraduate (BDes) or postgraduate (MDes) courses. There is no such provision for direct admission at NID Bangalore. Admission to all programs at NID Ahmedabad, and across all NID campuses, is solely based on a rigorous entrance exam process involving the National Institute of Design Aptitude Test (NID DAT). The NID DAT is a two-stage exam comprising:

1. Prelims: This objective-type computer-based test assesses design aptitude, general knowledge, and observation skills. 

2. Mains: Shortlisted candidates from the Prelims undergo studio tests and a personal interview to evaluate their design thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

The NIDs offer B.Des, M.Des, and Ph.D courses. 

Admission to these courses will be based on the NID DAT entrance exam, which comprises DAT Prelims and DAT Mains.

The NID DAT 2025 (Prelims) entrance exam will be conducted on January 5, 2025. The application form is now open from September 3 - December 3, 2024.

Candidates who meet the NID DAT 2025 eligibility criteria may apply before the last date.

Courses offered by NIDs

The NIDs offer both B.Des and M.Des courses. The institute and program-wise seat intake at the participating colleges is given below.

Q:   Is there any way to get admission at NID Bangalore without taking an exam (I missed the exam)?

A:

Unfortunately, no. NID Bangalore MDes admission are strictly entrance-based. Candidates need to appear for NID DAT to secure admission at NID Bangalore. 

The NID DAT is conducted in two stages and they are:

  • DAT Prelims
  • DAT Mains

Interested candidates must begin the admission process by applying for NID DAT prelims. The application process is conducted online on the official website of NID. Aspirants can apply for maximum two disciplines.

Q:   Is there any age limit for appearing in NIFT 2025?

A:

In case of the B. Des and B.FTech programmes, the candidates should be less than 24 years as on July 1 of the admission year. There is relaxation of 5 years for candidates belonging to SC, ST, and PwD categories. However, there is no age limit for applying to the postgraduate programmes at NIFT. When applying for admission to design courses at the NIFTs, the candidate must also carefully go through the academic requirements. Note that even if a candidate qualifies the NIFT Entrance Exam but doesn't meet the prescribed eligibility criteria, he or she will not be considered for admission.

Q:   What is the eligibility criteria for NIFT 2025?

A:

The eligibility criteria may differ depending on the course opted by the candidate. For instance, candidates seeking admission to the B. Des course needs to have passed 10+2 exam from a recognised institute and should be less than 24 years as of August 1, 2025. Relaxation of 5 years in the upper age limit applies for candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwD candidates.

Q:   Is Maths required for NIFT?

A:

It is not compulsory to have studied Maths in Class 12 to appear for NIFT Entrance Exam. However, some questions from Mathematics are asked in the NIFT GAT section. Therefore, it is always beneficial to have some knowledge about the subject. The NIFT question paper for GAT will include questions from sections like logical and analytical reasoning, general awareness, verbal reasoning, and English . General knowledge questions may include topics like fashion industry, both local and global, and news of political and economic importance. The GAT paper will be conducted in a computer-based mode and will be for 120 minutes.

Q:   Can I join NID Kurukshetra directly?

A:
To join the National Institute of Design (NID) Kurukshetra, you need to go through the admission process, which includes the NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT), portfolio submission, and an interview. The DAT is an annual national-level exam, and the application process is primarily conducted online. Therefore, you cannot join NID Kurukshetra directly; you need to follow the specified admission procedure.

NID Admission Process

Admission to all the courses offered at NID is based on an aspirant’s performance in the NID Entrance Exam. The NID admission process is conducted in two stages – NID DAT Prelims and NID DAT Mains.

NID DAT Prelims comprises a written entrance exam. Shortlisted candidates are eligible to appear in DAT Main.

DAT Mains will include a Studio Test.

However, M.Des candidates must take a personal interview, to go with the Studio Test.

The final NID result is prepared by allotting 30% to the candidate’s score in NID DAT Prelims and 70% weightage to NID DAT Mains.

NID Cutoffs

NID releases category-wise cutoffs for each course offered at its campuses. Aspirants need to meet NID cutoffs in order to be eligible for admission in BDes and MDes courses offered at this design college.

NID Fee Structure

The fee structure for NID courses is different for Indian nationals, candidates from SAARC and African countries as well as the rest of the world. The NID tuition fee is to be paid by aspirants every semester whereas other components of the NID fee are to be paid yearly.
