B.Des and M.Des are popular design courses offered at NID campuses. Admission to these courses will be based on NID DAT 2024 merit ranks. The application form for NID DAT 2024 is currently OPEN, with DAT Prelims scheduled for December 24, 2023. List of NIDs in India: Courses, Fee & Admission Process

The National Institute of Design (NID) is the first design school to be declared as an ‘Institution of National Importance’ by an Act in the Indian Parliament. Initially known as the National Institute of Industrial Design, NID was established in 1961.

An autonomous institute falling under the ambit of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, NID is famous for offering design courses in specialisations like Industrial, Communication, Textile and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design.

The National Institute of Design will conduct the NID DAT 2024 (Prelims) exam on December 24, 2023. The exam will be administered in a centre-based mode and as a paper-and-pencil/pen test. The application form for NID DAT 2024 is currently open; the last date to apply for the exam with a regular fee is December 1, 2023. 

With late fees, applications will be accepted up to December 3, 2023.

NID Admission Process

Admission in all the courses offered at NID is on the basis of an aspirant’s performance in NID Entrance Exam. NID admission process is conducted in two stages – NID DAT Prelims and NID DAT Mains.

NID DAT Prelims comprises a written entrance exam that is conducted for BDes, GDPD and MDes course admissions. Candidates who clear this admission round are eligible to appear for NID DAT Main wherein aspirants need to appear for the Studio Test and Personal Interview round.

The final NID result is prepared by allotting 30% to the candidate’s score in NID DAT Prelims and 70% weightage to NID DAT Mains.

NID Cutoffs

NID releases category-wise cutoffs for each course offered at its campuses. Aspirants need to meet NID cutoffs in order to be eligible for admission in BDes and MDes courses offered at this design college.

On the basis of NID Entrance Exam 2024, aspirants can secure admission to 425 seats offered in the BDes courses and 347 seats in the MDes course.

 Note that previously, the NIDs also offered a Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD), which has been since discontinued.

NID Fee Structure

The fee structure for NID courses is different for Indian nationals, candidates from SAARC and African countries as well as the rest of the world. The NID tuition fee is to be paid by aspirants every semester whereas other components of the NID fee are to be paid on a yearly basis.
