List of NIDs in India: Courses, Fee & Admission Process. Go through the complete list of NIDs in India with detailed information about the admission process, courses offered & seat intake. Admission to NIDs will be based on NID DAT 2026 merit rank. NID 2026 application is now open; DAT Prelims is expected to take place in the first week of January.

The list of NIDs includes institutes that will accept NID DAT 2026 scores for admission to their B.Des and M.Des courses. Currently, the B.Des program is offered at 5 NIDs and has an intake of 425 seats, while the M.Des program is available at 3 NIDs and has 347 seats earmarked for Indian nationals.

The National Institute of Design (NID) is the first design school to be declared an ‘Institution of National Importance’ by an Act in the Indian Parliament. Initially known as the National Institute of Industrial Design, NID was established in 1961. An autonomous institute under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, NID is famous for offering B.Des specialisation in Industrial, Communication, Textile, and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design.

Latest Update: 

The NIDs offer B.Des, M.Des, and Ph.D courses. Admission to these courses will be based on the NID entrance exam, which consists of the DAT Prelims and DAT Mains. NID DAT Prelims is conducted offline. NID Mains consists of Studio Test and Personal Interview. 

The National Institute of Design has announced the dates for NID DAT Mains for M.Des. The Studio Test was conducted on March 08, 2026. The NID Interview will be conducted from March 21, 2026, to April 01, 2026. NID Mains Admit card was released on February 24, 2026. NID DAT 2026 Prelims exam was conducted on December 21, 2025, for B.Des and M.Des.

Q:   Can I apply for NIFT 2026 with late fees?
A: 

Yes, the National Institute of Fashion Technology will allow candidates with late fees. The late fee application window will open once the deadline to fill out the NIFT 2026 application form with regular fee closes. The start and last date to fill out the NIFT 2026 application form with late fee will be notified by the institute before the regular application form closes or sometime thereabout. The late fee for NIFT 2026 will be INR 5,000. The late fee has to be paid in addition to the application fee, which is INR 3000 for open category candidates.

Q:   Can I appear in Situation Test/PI if I don't qualify the NIFT written exams?
A: 

The Situation Test/ Personal Interview (PI) are the 2nd stage of the NIFT 2026 entrance exam. Candidates were shortlisted for the Situation Test/ PI based on the NIFT 2026 written exam scores.

Note that if the candidate fails to qualify for the 2nd stage, he or she is not considered for admission to various design courses offered by the NIFTs.

The only exception is B.F.Tech program, where the merit list for admission will be prepared solely on the basis of GAT scores.

In the case of other courses, the merit list will be prepared by giving weightage to the written exams and Situation Test/ PI.

Q:   Can I appear in Situation Test/PI if I don't qualify the NIFT 2026 written exams?
A: 

Candidates will be shortlisted for NIFT 2026 Studio Test/ Interview based on performance in NIFTEE Stage 1. NIFT 2026 written exams comprise the GAT and CAT exams.

If the candidate fails to be included in the shortlist, he or she is not eligible to appear in the Situation Test/ Interview.

Q:   Can I fill out NIFT 2026 application form if I don't meet the eligibility criteria?
A: 

No, you should not fill out NIFT 2026 application form if you do not meet the eligibility criteria because all documents and information provided by you in application form will be cross checked. And if any discrepancy is found, you can be disqualified at any stage of application process. 

Q:   What is the minimum qualifying criteria for NID 2026 admissions?
A: 

Minimum qualifying criteria for NID DAT are the minimum marks candidate needs to secure for admission. Category-wise cut-off would be released at the time of counseling and seat allotment. Cut-off would be prepared by considering factors: total number of applicants, merit ranks of applicants in NID DAT, seat intake of applied programme, etc. 

Q:   Can candidates with backlog seek admission through NID DAT?
A: 

Candidates who are yet to appear for the Class 12 exam in 2026 must have passed the exam in their first attempt. If the candidate has any backlog/ compartment/ supplementary or has not cleared the Class 12 exam, the candidate will not be considered for NID DAT admission. Also, any fee paid by the candidate will be forfeited.

NID Admission Process 2026

Admission to all the courses offered at NID is based on an aspirant’s performance in the NID DAT Exam 2026. The NID admission process is conducted in two stages

  1. NID DAT Prelims & Mains.
  2. NID DAT Prelims comprises a written entrance exam. Shortlisted candidates are eligible to appear in the DAT Main.

DAT Mains will include a Studio Test. However, M.Des candidates must take a personal interview, to go with the Studio Test. The final NID DAT 2026 result is prepared by giving weightage to NID DAT Mains.

NID Cutoffs 2026

NID releases category-wise cutoffs for each course offered at its campuses. Aspirants must meet NID DAT 2026 cutoffs to be eligible for admission in BDes and MDes courses offered at this design college.

NID 2026 exam scores will be used to fill B.Des and M.Des seats. The seat intake for B.Des and M.Des is 425 and 347, respectively. The NID has discontinued the Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) course.
