Mystory@Prosenjit Ghosh: How I selected my career

2 mins readUpdated on May 10, 2017 17:09 IST

I chose Hotel Management because I wanted a job at the end of my course. I decided on Hotel Management without knowing what I will be doing after I land up in a hotel. My main motto was to get a job. I had not done much research about my course rather I was influenced by the rosy and picturesque advertisement in national newspaper. And this is the case with most of the candidates right now. Most students pursuing a course don't know whether the course is meant for them. But I don't regret because a career in hotel has moulded me into what I am today. Although I am not directly related to hotel right now but I am connected to hotel and tourism somehow or the other.

If we do something out of passion, there is somebody somewhere to pay us handsomely.

If somebody wants to pursue a career and wants to make a living out of it then that person should pursue something that he/ she is passionate about. But most of the students don't know what they are passionate about. Even if they know it, they don't know if they can earn a living from it. So go for something that you can do even if nobody pays you. And the good thing is that if we do something out of passion, there is somebody somewhere to pay us handsomely. So set your goal and find way to reach it.

I might not have chosen the right career. But career is not made in single day or event. I am not a tree, I can change for something better and more resourceful. I am still finding my right job. I have learnt one thing that if mind can believe something, it can achieve it. It’s all in mind.

You have to devote time for learning and relearning.

I used to be very shy and introvert but I found that it is not good for an hotelier to be shy. So I changed and got a job with The Oberoi's. I learnt that only one thing that is constant is change. You have to devote time for learning and relearning. Things which we learn in college are all theory that are of no use as we don't know their practicality. I suggest know your industry well by updating yourself from trade magazines and journals. Do pay visit to the industry if you have contacts.

My tips in choosing a career are:

1) First know what you are passionate about.

2) Next, find out whether you can make a career out of your passion.

3) Then find out the things you need to know and courses available for the same.

4) Choose the best college available.

5) Lastly keep learning and updating yourself in the field of your passion.

Choose a career which pleases you even if it annoys your parents and relatives.
