Basic Admission Procedure for Humanities Programme

Students can pursue a course in Humanities and Social Sciences at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. General eligibility criteria followed by a majority of colleges/ institutes or universities to enrol students are given below:

  • For UG Level: Candidates must have cleared Class 10+2 in any stream with a minimum of 50- 60% marks from a recognised board.

  • For PG Level: Candidates must have cleared graduation preferably in the subject in which they wish to pursue a master's with a minimum of 50-60% aggregate marks.

Note: The eligibility for Humanities & Social Sciences mentioned above may vary depending on the policy of the university or college in which a candidate is applying for admission.

In India, most of the universities offer admissions to the Humanities discipline based on merit, various common entrance exams or conduct their own entrance exams. Listed below are a few entrance exams with a brief about the same: 

CUET or Common University Entrance Test: The National Testing Agency holds CUET to provide admission to candidates in UG and PG courses. The national-level entrance exam is conducted online for programmes such as UG and PG. 

HSEE or Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Exam: IIT Madras conducts HSEE for students willing to take admissions in a 5-year integrated Master of Arts (MA) programme at the college. It is a national-level exam, conducted online and offline. 

PUBDET or Presidency University Bachelor Entrance Test: The West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam Board (WBJEEB) conducts PUBDET in offline mode. It is a University level exam, conducted to shortlist students for admission in its BA and B.Sc (Hons) programs.
