What are Liberal Arts?

An education in the Liberal Arts is usually related to one of these four areas: social sciences, natural sciences, humanities and arts. The central disciplines in a liberal arts course are as follows:

Logic

Literature

Political Science

History

Psychology

Mathematics

Physics

Biology

Philosophy

Linguistics

Students pick Liberal Arts immediately after school to get their basics right, as they plan to take up professions in various fields. Universities and colleges generally offer students a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in liberal studies, where students get to choose their major and minor subjects.

Q:   Is it easy to get admission in Loyola College?
A:

The admission process of Loyola College is both entrance and entrance-based. Candidates are shortlisted based on merit in the last qualifying examination or college-level entrance test for PG courses.

Q:   How hard is it to get admission in Delhi University for an average student?
A:

The admission process for Delhi University (DU) is extremely competitive, especially for the well known and popular courses and colleges. However, the difficulty level of admission varies depending on the programme a student wishes to get into. Some of the key parameters that define how difficult can be for a student to get into a good DU college with good course:

  • Scores in CUET/ Class 12
  • Category
  • Selection of College + Course combination in the CSAS registration process

Up until 2021, only top scorers of Class 12 were able to get into Hindu, Hansraj, Miranada, SRCC, LSR and other reputed colleges for top courses such as BA (Hons) in Economics/ English/ Political Science, BSc (Hons) Physics/ Chemistry/ Mathematics and BCom (Hons) courses. However, the introduction of CUET has changed the game. Now, even if a student could not do well in Class 12 has a chance of getting into the cream colleges with a good score in CUET.

However, if the dream is just to study in a reputed DU college, there is a basic hack that can be followed by anyone and everyone. All the top colleges of DU offer short-duration certificate courses in Languages and other interest areas. Those who are not able to get into DU can witness the buzz of being a DU student by pursuing these courses. For details on the same, students are advised to visit the official website of the DU affiliated colleges.

Other than a direct course in liberal arts, colleges offer BA programmes where students can pick electives from at least two disciplines that are offered. You can choose a major in English and a minor in History, or you can take up Economics as your major and Political Science as your minor subject. Candidates who still feel they are not content with a bachelor's degree can also go on to pursue a Master's degree in Liberal Studies.

Liberal Arts Required Skills

Courses in Liberal Arts help students acquire and elevate several soft skills. Broadly, these skills include the following -

Skillsets Required for Liberal Arts
Problem-Solving Good Communication
Questioning Reasoning
Professional Behavior Dedication
Creative Thinking Time Management

What is the Need for Liberal Arts?

"The purpose of a Liberal Arts education is to open the mind, correct it, to refine it, to enable it to know and to digest, master, rule, and use its knowledge, to give its power over its own faculties, application, flexibility, method, critical exactness, sagacity, resource, address, and eloquent expression", said John Henry Newman. Most other educational paths develop students into professionals with a very unidirectional approach. Liberal Arts, on the other hand, train students to have a diverse set of skills that fit better in a dynamic society like ours.

Through a course in Liberal Arts, people are exposed to a variety of subjects ranging from the arts to the sciences.
