Mathematics is an area of knowledge that includes the study of numbers, formulas, structures, shapes, spaces, quantities and their changes. Math is all around us, in everything we do. It is the main driving force behind scientific discoveries and the building block for everything in our daily lives, including mobile devices, computers, software, architecture, art, money, engineering, sports and others.

Maths at the initial/school level typically focuses on learning procedures to solve numerical problems in its various branches like Algebra, Geometry, Number Systems Etc. However, Mathematics at the graduate level is about solving real problems, problems that can arise from the everyday world, or from science, or within mathematics itself.

Mathematics is a vital academic discipline that forms an indispensable tool in different fields such as natural science, engineering, psychology, medicine, and economics. The mathematics courses make the aspirants capable enough for efficient leadership and also create a vision for the dynamic program of mathematics.

Different Mathematics Courses in India

1. Associate's Courses (School level)

It is the basic foundation level course in Mathematics offered under 10+2 (Class 12). In order to enrol in this course, a candidate must have a high school. It has a combination of general education with math courses. After completion, the students will receive an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree.

2.  Bachelor's Degrees

Students opting for it receive a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. They need to have a high school diploma or GED to get enrolled in this course. This course makes them capable to teach math in grades K-12.

3. Master's Degrees

This program is suitable for those candidates who want to teach the subject in a 2-year or 4-year college/university. Even high school maths teachers can opt for it to enhance their credentials and expertise in the subject. They need a bachelor's degree for admission to this course.

Candidates who intend for advanced training in the subject or wish to have a PhD later can opt for a Master of Science degree in Mathematics, which requires 2 years for completion.

4. PhD in Mathematics

This course trains students to become researchers and scholars. Candidates need a Master's degree to apply for this program. They can become experts in specific areas such as engineering or computational science, after completion of this course. The course takes 4-6 years for completion and has final written and oral exams too. It may necessitate a candidate to be proficient in a foreign language.

Depending on their educational goals, aspirants can choose any of the available specializations, which have been enlisted below:

  • Pure Mathematics

  • Applied Mathematics

  • Computational Mathematics

  • Algebra and Number Theory

  • Topology and Foundations

  • Geometric Analysis

Entrance Exams for Mathematics Courses

Most of the government and private colleges give admissions on the basis of marks scored in Class 12th exams for undergraduate courses. The marks scored in CUET UG is also a determining factor for admission to the courses. Similarly the admissions to postgraduate courses depends on the marks scored in CUET PG and the doctoral admissions are done on the basis of RET conducted by different universities or CSIR NET conducted by UGC.

In terms of career opportunities, both universities offer diversified exposure to their students in the economic and planning fields. In Maths. M.Sc. Data Science or M.Sc. Data Analytics are near equal degrees. Data Science is a field where Mathematics and Statistics are visually coming alive on scientific decision making based on analyzing any data, be it business, industrial, social, healthcare, pharma, media and so on. You will love to admire your Mathematics and Statistics that you hated while doing them at your B.Sc. Mathematics/Statistics level. You will feel proud that you have chosen the right course at M.Sc. Level in Data Science that will propel you as Data Scientist to which very few contestants are there in the final.
Is it good to do an M.Sc. In data Science after a B.Sc. In Statistics to get jobs? I think a lot of that depends on what hard technical skills you already have. While many people think that more Statistics you know the better, most of what you do in data Science is not straight up Statistics or algorithm creation. Instead there are typically building and deploying models using known and existing algorithms. There are things that you will get out of a data Science programme that you will not get out of a Statistics programme (although this is changing to some extent because of the growth of data Science). .
