Mystory@Shreeti Mallu: How I selected my college and career path

Mystory@Shreeti Mallu

As I belong to a business family, I was always very much involved and interested in doing business since the very beginning. I used to help my father and learn from him. So in class XI-XII, I chose Commerce as it has subjects like Accounts, Business Studies and Economics which would be really helpful for my future and I was a tad familiar with these terms.

My dream is to become a TV Journalist in future.

When I was in Class VIII, the 26/11 attack happened. The way the reporters were reporting the incident inspired me. That very day, I decided that I would pursue Mass Communication after class XII. I applied to the best Mass Communication colleges to achieve my dream. After searching for months, I found the National Institute of Mass Communication (NIMC), Delhi as the best one. It was just like my dream had come true. I was just waiting for the exams to happen and kept my fingers crossed. My dream is to become a TV Journalist in future.

How I cracked college admission

To prepare myself for interviews and various tests of different mass communication colleges, I read Manorama Yearbook, Pratiyogita Darpan and newspapers of course.

We really had an extremely hard entrance test and interview. First, I had to clear an interview on current affairs and was asked to share my opinion about the current scenario related to global warming and many more questions. Then came the next step – the written entrance test. They asked five to six questions which carried 10 marks each. We had to write short and long answers, respectively depending upon the word limit. After taking the both written test and interview, I got selected. That day, I was just on top of the world. That feeling of getting selected in your dream course was just mesmerizing. Every single member of my family was happy to see me happy.

I had given test and interviews in two more colleges namely Christ University, Bangalore and CMS University, Bangalore. I was selected in both the universities. As Delhi is known as the media hub and we get more opportunities here, I thought to go with NIMC.

What I gained from my college experience

College has taught me a lot. Living away from home in a place where you aren't known, itself teaches many things.

I liked to attend practical classes more than attending theory classes. As I think Mass Communication is all about practical knowledge and our college excels in that as it gives us 70 per cent of practical classes. Our teachers help us in every possible way to excel in every subject of Mass Communication namely, Reporting, Editing, Print Media, Street Play, Public Relations and Advertising. I like attending all the lectures but mainly Print Media sessions and TV Journalism classes are my favourites.

Extra-curricular activities are very important as we get to know about various fields and can participate in the area we are interested in. For extra-curricular activities, our college has various societies so that each and every student can participate in it. We have Newseum for students interested in TV journalism, Shutter Box for students interested in photography, and Cinegram is for those who are interested in direction and script writing. Besides this, we have NIMC Diaries for students interested in writing. Communion is for PR and advertising and Audiots for students interested in radio and video jockeying. I am part of Newseum.

College has taught me a lot. Living away from home in a place where you aren't known, itself teaches many things. You make new friends with different ideologies. We have some very good memories and some bad memories. It teaches us how to deal with it all. Sometimes your work is praised by everyone, sometimes its vice-versa. There also, we learn something. In short, college life plays a very important role in a person's life. According to me, everyone should experience it once. As rightly said, "Opportunity never knocks twice", so whenever you get an opportunity, grab it. NIMC really works hard for our betterment.

NIMC has always been my choice and I’ll always be proud to be an NIMCian.
