CAT 2017 clashing with IIFT exam has left scores of MBA aspirants worried. Read more on Shiksha

The schedule of Indian's most popular MBA entrance exam was announced on July 30, 2017 leaving many aspirants in a grave dilemma. The Common Admission Test or CAT is scheduled to be held on the same date as the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) exam is supposed to be held i.e. 26, 2017.

Since both the exams hold great significance viz MBA admissions in India, scores of candidates who plan to appear in both the exams are facing a huge dilemma. CAT 2017 will be held in two sessions, 9 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm; while IIFT exam will be held between 10 am and 12 pm.

Shocked to know that the dates of both the exams are clashing, MBA aspirant Ravindra Dutt told Shiksha that he is unable to think through this. "I am so confused. While on one hand IIFT is one of my target institutes, on the other hand I can't afford to skip CAT," he said. Most of the aspirants must be in the same state as Ravindra.

Either they will have to choose CAT’s forenoon session to be able to manage both the exams or skip one of them. If they choose former option, it will be difficult to accomodate more number of students in CAT's forenoon session, which will disturb the entire examination process. And if the students opt for latter, the number of registration will drop drastically for IIFT as CAT is a national level exam and a gateway to 19 IIMs and over 150 other B-schools. IIFT exam scores are valid for admission to only IIFT.

To avoid this situation, IIFT would have to change the exam date and come up with a new schedule. Even though IIFT had announced its exam schedule before IIM Lucknow (CAT convening body for 2017), it is unlikely that CAT schedule will change.

It remains to be seen what happens. Till then the aspirants will be keeping their fingers crossed.

Here are the schedules of CAT 2017 and IIFT exam:
