Discover a new you while doing MBA
By Prof. Dr. Nilanjan Chattopadhyay
“Sail away from the safe Harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover,” said Levison Wood, an explorer who hitchhiked through places on earth which are rarely understood. I correlated his statement with a statement made by the HR head of one of the most popular recruiters. He used to pick up few of the grads of my School with very low grades at very high salary packages, not once, but year after year. I couldn’t resist asking him his thought behind this apparently negative correlation. I appreciate his wisdom because he said he was looking for candidates who can jump in the ocean, swim across not only to save themselves, but do a good business on the way.
Going for an international exchange gives a demo of that experience. You sail out from the safe harbour of the hostel, your room, your institution, your environment to something unknown, unpredictable, unfamiliar but unforgettable. What you learn in a span of three months in the process of getting into a different group in an unfamiliar environment, may be speaking a different language is of lifetime value. It will give you the confidence of facing any situation in your work life, working with unknown members in the same team, that too, without complaining about it.
Some of the Business Schools in India are giving you this grand opportunity to go for international exchange for one term in the course of your MBA. For example, TAPMI Jaipur gives opportunity to a select few students to go to some of the best schools in Europe, USA and Dubai namely Renne School of Business France, University of Denver USA, MAHE Dubai.
I have witnessed the change that has happened in personality and attitude of large number of students who went through the exchange program. From boys, they transformed into men and from girls, they got matured into ladies ready to take the business challenges head on with exemplary confidence. While choosing your Business School, do look for international exchange opportunities you may get and put enough weight to that parameter to reach your decision. Dream what you can do. Explore how you can do. And Discover what all you can do which you never even thought you can. Make the best of your two years of MBA.
