What is IIM?

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) started imparting MBA in 1961 with two of its most reputed campuses – IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta becoming operational that year. In the next few years, the number of IIMs increased to six. Between 2008 and 2015, fourteen new IIMs were launched. Oldest of these new IIMs is IIM Shillong established in 2008, followed by IIM Ranchi and IIM Rohtak in 2009. In 2010, IIM Raipur was launched and in the following year (2011) three new institutes were established –IIM Kashipur, IIM Trichy, IIM Udaipur. In 2015, six IIMs (Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Bodh Gaya, Nagpur, Amritsar and Visakhapatnam) were launched. IIM Jammu was launched in 2016 under the mentorship of IIM Lucknow. In 2023, NITIE was renamed as IIM Mumbai. The newest campus to join the list is IIM Guwahati which became operational in 2025. It will host the first batch of full time MBA in 2026.
