The Board is planning to create a uniform internal assessment policy for Class 10 and 12 without utilizing assessments of other classes.
Amid the COVID-19 crisis, the internal assessments are here to stay. This makes it necessary for students to be consistent in their performance.
This is made clearer by taking a look at the assessment criteria of Classes 10th and 12th. For CBSE Class 10, the result will be calculated on the basis of an “objective criterion” developed by the Board. Students will be assessed out of maximum of 100 marks for each subject. The internal Assessment for 20 marks will be as per the existing policy while the CBSE came up with an innovative idea for the distribution of the remaining 80 marks in each subject.
Due to the cancellation of the CBSE Class 10th Board examinations, the assessment of 80 marks will be done by the school:
- based on the marks scored by the students in the different tests/exams conducted by the school during the year, and
- the marks should be in consonance with the past performance of the school in Class 10thBoard examinations.
The CBSE will consider the following exams for awarding the marks to students:
| Category of tests/exams |
Maximum marks |
|---|---|
| Periodic tests/Unit tests |
10 |
| Half-yearly/Midterm exams |
30 |
| Pre-board exams |
40 |
| Internal assessment |
20 |
| Total |
100 |
In case schools have conducted more than one test/exam within each category, the result committee may fix the weightage to be given to each test/exam within the category subject to the overall maximum marks for that category.
For CBSE Class 12, CBSE recommended a 30:30:40 formula. As per the formula, 30 per cent weightage will be given to Class 10 and Class 11 final results respectively, and 40 per cent to Class 12 pre-board exams. Practicals will be for 100 marks and the students will be marked based on the marks submitted by the schools. For Class 12, marks in the best of three of five papers in term exams will be considered.
“We will now be extending the assessment policy of 2021 and creating an assessment policy for 2022 keeping the pandemic in view,” says Sanyam Bharadwaj, controller of Examination, CBSE. He further said, “This year, we are utilizing the assessment of other classes for evaluating students, but in 2022, we would develop the internal assessment of Class 10 and 12 in such a manner that it would be uniform across the nation, transparent and logical so that we can utilise the same for the declaration of results. At regular intervals, the board will receive the performance of the students, the details of which can be utilized for result declaration in case of any pandemic like challenges, without using the assessment of other classes. We are planning to strengthen the importance of unit tests, half yearly, mid-terms, and pre-board examinations,” he said.
The focus on internal assessments will require students to be serious from the start since their performance in each and every test might be utilized in the final assessments. The CBSE, for its part, will be judiciously dividing the syllabus so that students do not feel stressed or overburdened. “Schools are being given greater autonomy in the sphere of internal assessments and are competent enough to ensure quality learning and fairness in the system."
