The introduction of the global curriculum is part of a larger reform plan aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP), which aims to offer students a flexible, globally competitive learning experience.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is preparing to launch a global curriculum that can be offered not only by its foreign-affiliated schools but also by international schools and those affiliated with the board in India. According to officials, the curriculum is expected to be introduced for the 2026-27 academic session, with discussions already underway for finalizing the draft. A key meeting has been scheduled for this week to further deliberate on the initiative before making the details available to the public.
Global Curriculum Aligned with National Education Policy (NEP)
The introduction of the global curriculum is part of a larger reform plan aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP), which aims to offer students a flexible, globally competitive learning experience. The Union Education Minister had recently chaired a meeting where CBSE was tasked with preparing a detailed action plan outlining the modalities for establishing and implementing the new curriculum.
“This global curriculum will cater to the needs of students in CBSE’s foreign schools starting from the 2026-27 academic session, and will also be available for international schools affiliated with other boards. Furthermore, CBSE-affiliated schools in India will also have the option to adopt this curriculum,” a senior CBSE official confirmed.
Reviving International Curriculum: A Second Attempt
This is not the first time CBSE is venturing into the international curriculum space. In 2010, the board introduced CBSE-i (Central Board of Secondary Education – International) as a pilot program in select schools both in India and abroad. The aim was to offer an internationally benchmarked curriculum that was inquiry-based and skill-oriented. Despite its promising start, CBSE-i faced operational challenges and saw limited adoption, leading to its discontinuation in 2017.
The new global curriculum will build upon the lessons learned from CBSE-i while offering a more adaptable and competitive framework to meet global standards.
Key Features of the New Global Curriculum
According to officials, the new global curriculum will provide a blend of global education practices and Indian values. It is designed to compete with well-established international boards like Cambridge International (CI) and International Baccalaureate (IB). The key elements of this curriculum will include:
- A flexible and less rigid pedagogy compared to traditional curricula.
- A focus on interdisciplinary learning, research-based projects, and critical thinking.
- A balance between Indian core values and global learning standards.
- The integration of aspects from CBSE’s national curriculum alongside international perspectives.

Currently, CBSE does not offer an international curriculum. International schools in India and abroad are typically affiliated with other boards such as CI, IB, or the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). With the introduction of this new global curriculum, CBSE plans to expand its educational offerings, providing an additional choice for schools seeking a globally aligned yet adaptable syllabus.
A senior board official said, “With the pedagogical structure and framework expected to be finalized soon, CBSE is preparing to re-enter the international education sector. The official launch in April 2026 is expected to give students access to a curriculum that combines national educational priorities with global learning standards.”
Aiming for Greater Flexibility and Global Competitiveness
The global curriculum is expected to offer a higher degree of flexibility, allowing for a more diverse range of learning methods that better align with international education standards. This will offer both Indian and international students the opportunity to benefit from a system that emphasizes skill development while maintaining core educational values rooted in the country’s heritage.
As CBSE prepares for this significant move, educational institutions across the globe will be watching closely, with the potential for this curriculum to shape the future of education in India and beyond.
Looking Ahead: Implementation and Impact
As the discussions continue and the final framework for the global curriculum is rolled out, CBSE is poised to make a lasting impact in the international education sector. This new curriculum, scheduled for a 2026-27 rollout, promises to offer students a robust educational experience that integrates national values with international best practices in learning. With the growing demand for adaptable, globally competitive education, the CBSE global curriculum could become an essential option for schools around the world.
