Maharashtra Education Board has now turned to school principals and teachers to find out if internal assessment based on online teaching is possible.

Amid the ongoing pandemic, Maharashtra board has decided to cancel the Mah SSC board exams 2021 that were scheduled to be conducted in offline mode. With uncertainty looming over the evaluation, the state has now turned to school principals and teachers to find out if internal assessment based on online teaching is possible.

CBSE and ICSE have started evaluations based on internal tests. However, the assessment for Maharashtra board SSC is yet to be finalized.

Schools affiliated with Maharashtra Board were instructed not to take online exams due to connectivity issues in rural areas. While many private schools have conducted internal tests, government-aided schools followed the state directives.

Principals of government schools have communicated the challenges of internal assessment-based evaluation. Students have to be evaluated for 600 marks (best of five subjects). The board has developed a survey and wants principals, teachers and management to respond.

This year, over 17 lakh students were to write their SSC examination. A CET for Class 11 admission is also being discussed.

Principals urge for a need to develop a sound methodology so that it can be applied the next academic year too.

According to a school principal in Bandra, “Last year, very little assessment was done. Some evaluation was possible in January and February, but evaluating them based on two months will be unfair.”

Students have begun scrambling to submit assignments. About 10-15 per cent are out of the city due to the pandemic. “We have been told to get these students to submit assignments and projects in case internal evaluation becomes inevitable,” said a teacher from a Goregaon school. The state has also asked schools to give details of evaluation processes.
