National Council of Educational Research and Training has issued clarification regarding its Class 8 Social Science textbook titled “Exploring Society: India and Beyond”, following online discussions over a page that went viral on social media. Post had led to concern and criticism from several quarters regarding content, prompting calls for clarification.
In a post on its official handle on X (formerly Twitter), NCERT said that image being circulated is “authentic and contextually appropriate,” and forms part of official textbook developed in accordance with approved syllabus and curriculum framework. Council has further stated that its textbook has undergone standard review and publication protocols, and that section being highlighted is factually correct and consistent with pedagogical intent.
NCERT has emphasised that it is committed to producing inclusive, accurate, and curriculum aligned textbooks that promotes critical thinking. It has also asked readers not to misinterpret content without proper academic context, especially when shared out of classroom framework.
Clarification has come due to increasing inspection of school books and recent changes being done by NCERT as per National Education Policy.
