IIT Madras to Offer BS in Chemistry, MTech in Electric Vehicles

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has introduced several new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for the academic year 2025–26, aimed at equipping students with cutting-edge skills for leadership roles in academia and industry.

The newly launched programmes include:

  1. B.S. in Chemistry: Admission via the IISER Aptitude Test
  2. M.Tech. in Electric Vehicles: Admission through GATE
  3. Two new B.Tech. programmes under Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering: Admission via JEE:
    • B.Tech. in Computational Engineering and Mechanics (CEM)
    • B.Tech. in Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering (iBME)

Welcoming students from all over the country to apply for these Programmes, Prof. Prathap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Courses), IIT Madras,“These new courses have been introduced keeping in mind the needs of both industry as well as academia and the aspirations of students.”

IIT Madras BS. (Chemistry):

The B.S. in Chemistry is a four-year undergraduate programme with an option to upgrade to an MS in Chemistry. Designed to build a strong foundation in Chemistry and related sciences, the programme combines rigorous theoretical instruction with hands-on laboratory training. It prepares students for diverse career paths in research, industry, and academia.

IIT Madras M.Tech in Electric Vehicles:

The M.Tech. in Electric Vehicles is a multidisciplinary, industry-oriented programme designed to equip graduates for leadership roles in addressing complex real-world challenges in both academia and the automotive sector. The curriculum features an interdisciplinary approach with industry-aligned courses, hands-on lab work, internships, and strong industry interaction, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the evolving mobility landscape.

IIT Madras BTech in Computational Engineering and Mechanics (CEM)

This unique Programme will prepare students for future digital engineering careers, in which physical systems converge with computational and Artificial Intelligence. It blends a learning of classical engineering knowledge with modern computational tools and will position graduates to address tomorrow’s complex, real-world engineering challenges.

IIT Madras BTech in Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering (IBME)

Graduates of this programme will be equipped to design clinically regulated, ethically sound solutions for global healthcare challenges. The curriculum prepares them for leadership and entrepreneurial roles in medical devices, rehabilitation technologies, and AI-driven healthcare while encouraging innovation in diagnostics and therapeutics. Students can also opt for a five-year Dual Degree (B.Tech. + M.Tech) through Interdisciplinary Dual Degree (IDDD) Programmes, including three coordinated by the Department: Computational Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Complex Systems & Dynamics.

Q:   What score is needed for admission to various courses offered at NIT Trichy?
A:

NIT Trichy is a government university and the admission to this university is based on merit and entrance exam scores. The accepted entrance exams are JEE Main. Candidates must give as many mock tests as possible for admission through the JEE Main exam. Do check the JEE Main exam pattern, and attempt as many JEE Main questions papers as possible. For particular score related details candidates must visit the official website or can even check the JEE Main College Predictor

Q:   Will IIT seats increase in 2025?
A:

In 2025, the number of seats in IITs was 18,160.  400 seats have been added across all 23 IITs.
In 2024, the number of seats was 17,760.
In 2023, the number of BTech seats in IITs was 17,385.

Q:   My GATE score is 500+. Can I get admission in NITs?
A:

If your GATE score is 500+, you have chances of getting into NITs, particularly for the courses and NITs with lower cutoffs.  NITs, such as Rourkela, Durgapur, Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology Bhopal accepted the GATE scores above 500+ in the Round 1 counselling. However, it also depends on the cutoff, category, course applying for and other factors.

IIT Madras FACE and Sports Excellence Admission (SEA)

IIT Madras has introduced the Fine Arts and Culture Excellence (FACE) admission from the 2025–26 academic year, with applications through a dedicated portal (ugadmissions.iitm.ac.in/face/) instead of JoSAA.

The Sports Excellence Admission (SEA), launched in 2024–25, recognises students with outstanding achievements in sports. Under both FACE and SEA, two seats per programme are reserved across all B.Tech. and B.S. programmes: one gender-neutral and one exclusively for female candidates.
