IIT Delhi Hosts Manasvi: STEM Mentorship Program

IIT Delhi STEM Program: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi hosted 100 schoolgirls from Classes 9 to 12, mainly from the Delhi NCR region, for Manasvi: STEM Mentorship Program for High School Girls, a flagship initiative by the Academic Outreach and New Initiatives Office. The program aims to inspire young girls to explore careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), address the gender imbalance in these fields, and equip them with the skills and mindset needed for future success.

The inaugural session of the 4th batch of the program began with a welcome address by Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director IIT Delhi. In his address, he said, โ€œWe aim to introduce you to STEM careers and guide you on how pursuing STEM can empower you to apply your ideas for the betterment of society.โ€

The program included a mix of informal and technical sessions, starting each day with interactive bonding activities led by IIT Delhi student volunteers. These sessions were thoughtfully designed to help the girls open up, share their dreams and challenges, and step outside their comfort zones. The formal sessions featured a series of inspiring talks and panel discussions with speakers from diverse fields.

A highlight was a powerful talk by Nozomu Hagiwara, a social activist and founder of the Nozomu Foundation. Another key moment was an engaging panel discussion with Dr. S. Arulselvi, Professor of Laboratory Medicine at JPNATC; Dr. Urvashi Yadav, Senior Resident at AIIMS New Delhi; and Dr. Lily Khosa, Chief Medical Officer and the beloved doctor at the IIT Delhi Hospital.

The afternoons were devoted to hands-on learning at the MakerSpace Lab, guided by Prof. Jay Dhariwal from the Department of Design at IIT Delhi and the MakerSpace team. Each participant had the opportunity to assemble a solar lamp kitโ€”an empowering experience that enabled the girls to create a functional, tangible product with their own hands.

The summer phase of the program concluded with a captivating keynote by Dr. Ritu Karidhal, ISRO scientist and popularly known as the โ€œRocket Woman of India.โ€ In her talk โ€œChallenges and Accomplishments of ISRO's Interplanetary Missions: The Chandrayaan to Mangalyaan and Future Possibilities for Young Space Enthusiasts.โ€
