It targets students in their fourth year of undergraduate engineering (B.Tech/B.E.) or second year of M.Sc. in relevant fields, addressing resource constraints and offering state-of-the-art training at no cost.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has called on higher education institutions across India to actively disseminate details of a specialized training program in semiconductor fabrication and characterization, specifically designed for tribal students.

This UGC initiative aims to enhance skill development and employability among tribal communities in the rapidly expanding semiconductor industry. The UGC emphasized the importance of ensuring maximum enrollment of eligible tribal students in this transformative program.

As per the UGC Notice, this effort is part of a broader collaboration between the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. The program, fully funded by the Ministry, plans to train 450 tribal students and faculty, providing them with hands-on experience in a dedicated training fab at IISc. It targets students in their fourth year of undergraduate engineering (B.Tech/B.E.) or second year of M.Sc. in relevant fields, addressing resource constraints and offering state-of-the-art training at no cost.

The initiative aligns with the β‚Ή77,000 crore India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which aims to establish multiple semiconductor fabrication and packaging facilities in India. With the SemiCon talent committee projecting a demand for 30,000 skilled workers by 2027 and 65,000 by 2032, this program positions tribal students to tap into well-paying job opportunities in a sector critical to electronics, automotive, and telecom industries. By fostering experiential learning, the UGC and IISc are supporting India’s ambition to become a global semiconductor hub, reducing reliance on imports while empowering underrepresented communities through education and skill development.
