Delhi University has asked NTA to conduct entrance exam for admission in UG, PG, MPhil and PhD prorgrammes offered by the colleges affiliated to the varsity. Read below for more details.

Delhi University is in talks to change its admission procedure for the upcoming academic session. As per the new admission procedure that Delhi University (DU) is expected to adopt, the varsity is likely to conduct entrance test for all its UG, PG, MPhil and PhD programmes. According to the latest report, National Testing Agency (NTA) has asked DU to give them the terms and conditions for the tests and other details.

Regarding this DU’s Vice-Chancellor, Yogesh Tyagi was quoted as saying that the DU admission committee might consider taking NTA's assistance in conducting the DU entrance exams for admissions. The DU admission committee is an independent panel whose members include experts, college principals and faculty.

If the entrance test is conducted then the first merit list containing names of candidates shortlisted for admission would be on the basis of their DU entrance exam scores. After this, weightage of marks secured by candidates in their best-of-four aggregate at the Class 12 level would be taken into consideration. The final DU admission list will be prepared by taking both these criteria, that is, entrance exam scores and Class 12 marks into consideration.

The primary reasons for adopting the entrance exam approach for DU admissions 2019 are as follows:

  • Conducting an entrance exam would help keep a tab on unrealistic DU cutoffs.
  • Delhi University entrance exam would help to curb disparities in Class 12 marks secured by students belonging to different education boards.
  • More students will be able to get a seat for admission in DU colleges and the minimum eligibility criteria to appear for DU entrance exam would also be kept low.
  • The entire duration of DU admission process would be reduced because after conducting the entrance exam, admission would be offered on the basis of centralised counselling.

DU’s admission committee had discussed conducting an entrance exam for DU admissions last year as well. But the committee faced hurdles in conducting the DU entrance exam and the decision also faced resistance from faculty members who formed a part of the admission committee.

Presently, DU conducts entrance exams like Delhi University Entrance Test (DUET), DU JAT and DU LLB for offering admission in a few UG and PG courses. Admisson to the remaining remaining courses offered at DU colleges is on the basis of DU cutoffs.

DU admissions 2019 are likely to begin from May 24. The university is expected to increase the application fee this year. The fee will be Rs 250 for general category which earlier was Rs 150. The SC/ST/OBC candidates will have to pay Rs 150. In a first, DU is likely to introduce online marks calculator and correction window. For each and every correction, candidates need to pay certain amount. There will be live display of cutoffs and vacant seats. For this, a 24X7 dashboard will be made accessible to candidates in their online portal.
