According to reports, the first such dual-degree course is likely to be launched at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has Condemned the reported moves to introduce an integrative course combining Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), calling it an “unscientific step” that would harm the integrity of medical education and public health.

According to reports, the first such dual-degree course is likely to be launched at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry. The IMA warned that the institution would lose its “national importance” status if it proceeded with what the association described as “mixopathy.”

In its statement, the IMA has stated, “We respect all systems of medicine and strongly opine that we need to preserve the purity of each system. Any attempt to mix MBBS with BAMS is regressive and will create hybrid doctors who are nothing but quacks.”

‘NMC not consulted’

The doctors’ body further alleged that the National Medical Commission (NMC) had not been consulted on the proposal, adding that it expects the NMC to strongly oppose the move. Highlighting the role of modern medicine in eradicating and treating life-threatening diseases, the IMA stressed that it was allopathic treatment, vaccination, and antiviral therapies that saved millions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Expressing concern over the health of future generations, the association appealed to citizens to resist this development. “Let patients choose their preferred system of medicine. Mixopathy takes away that right,” the IMA statement said.

Reports also suggest that an Institution of Integral Medical Education is being considered under the Auroville Foundation to provide dual degrees in MBBS and BAMS. The IMA has urged the NMC and the Union Health Ministry to intervene immediately and “take corrective steps.” The IMA has demanded the government withdraw the proposal in the interest of public health.
