Sure, you can. I am an aerospace engineer by education who has very strong software development skills and develops algorithms for my current job at Raytheon. For my particular role in my particular missile programme, I develop software for simulations, control algorithms for the missile, data analysis software, and various other tools that can help with all of this stuff such as scripts to generate documentation or automate chains of tasks. For me being in this role, I enjoy the fact I can still have fun with algorithm design when considering things like the proper data structures to utilize and whatnot, but then I personally also enjoy applying computational mathematics topics into some elegant algorithms that arena't just efficient, but they give robust and useful results numerically. It can be an exciting job that has a large variation of work to do and a pretty large amount of freedom in how you approach the problems.
