Aeronautical or aerospace engineering is used for same thing in India. But, I have not understood your use of term "on board performance". If you can elaborate, better advice could be offered.

I am afraid, lateral admission would be possible only in Maharashtra. Presently, only IITs are allowing Diploma as equivalent to class 12th. However, as you desired, I am attaching a link that will give you all the required information about top colleges offering Aeronautical Engineering.

My strong advice is not to give second thoughts to any Institute offering B.Tech, via distance education. Recently, SC of India has cancelled 10 years back degrees. Secondly, UGC has come down heavily to award degree through distance education mode for a study that requires extensive practicals.
If you are working, then go for AMIE.

MIT is perhaps the oldest institute in India to offer Aeronautical Engineering course. It all began in year 1949. Our Ex-President Shri APJ Abdul Kalam is an alumni of this Institute. I am attaching a link that will give you all the required information.

Engineering graduation is on a different plane than becoming AME. AE will get you jobs in areas of aviation research. It could be stepping stone for MBA or civil services exam. Recently, Infosys appointed an AE as it's CEO. On the other hand, AME along with license from DGCA will ensure job for you in an airline.

In nutshell, during the study of aeronautical engineering, one learns different aspects of flying objects including aero-engines, avionics, etc, in detail. If you download syllabus you will know all. Best college is, of course, IIT Mumbai.

You have posted a very good question. The answer is actually very simple. Aeronautical engineering or any other engineering course is of four years duration as mandated by AICTE. One gets a degree in engineering after successful completion of course. However, on the other hand course offered by HPAI is of three years and it is not an engineering degree course. You will get B.Sc in aviation or similar. After this college enables you to obtain licence from DGCA to enable you to work on the maintenance of civilian aircraft.
