I'm assuming that you're already a Biotech student at NSIT. So, the option of switching to COE/IT or related courses is out of reach.
Do biotech students get time for other activities?
Well, that's up to you. No engineering course is so intense that will keep you engaged all the time. The amount of time you can take out for other activities (e.g. programming, at it seems, in your case) is completely in your hands.
A major portion of students get placed in software related profiles (irrespective of their branch). That is good enough indicator of the coding atmosphere in NSIT. There are a number of platforms through which you can enhance your programming skills:
1) Periodic sessions conducted by societies like IEEE, CSI, etc.
2) Facebook groups
3) On the personal front, use challenges at Codechef, SPOJ, etc.
Other than this, you can obviously get in touch with your peers and seniors for guidance.
I don't have enough information to compare between the coding environment of DTU and NSIT.
Regarding NSIT's placement for Biotech in COE/IT related profiles, I suggest you get in touch with your 4th-year biotech seniors and/or students at Placecomm.

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary branch of science which is favorite among youngsters as it is providing ample opportunities for those who want to explore the new and advanced frontiers of science. It does not refer to a specific industry or job. Around 76% students get placed from the batch. The average package is about 6 lac per annum. But don't worry, it increases o0nce you in the room. If you are looking for more money, then go for non-core jobs.

Biotechnology is combining knowledge about life and living organisms with modern technology to create new systems, devices, materials, food that could improve human life and help preserve environment. Most biotechnology products are associated with agriculture, food industry and medicine, and logically - careers in those fields are most popular.
Gain more practical knowledge within your field, as this will help when you join the industry (Private or Government). almost all theoretical knowledge is useless if you don't have any relevant practical expertise, so concentrate more the practical side of your studies.

Biotechnology and Biochemical engineering focus on biological sciences, chemical and biochemical engineering microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry and genetics. Under this programme, students study about genetic technology and learn how to develop treatments for different diseases.
