True, IIT tag matters, but you must think of your career as a business in which you will actively invest. I had the choice of getting into an IIT (but not with a good branch. Rank -7609), yet I choose an NIT over IIT because after you have passed out from the college you actually have to work in that field. It's not just about the college. I always wanted to learn programming and be more knowledgeable in computer Science so I choose IT. True, you can get into corporate even with other branches but then the 4 years at college will not be an easy task. It was something I couldn't do.

Yes, you can but it mainly depends on the rank. You will surely get one if there is an NIT in your home state. Even without hone state you will get it. I studied at NIT Kurukshetra
My friend's rank 6Lacs. Plus ST plus home state he got CS in my college
Last SC rank in my college was around 2 lacs.

Let have a look at

The Engineering Services Examination, also known as the Indian Engineering Services, is a purely central government job with central government pay scales. PSU is a government-owned corporation that is used to refer to companies in which the government either the Union Government or state or territorial governments, or both owned a majority of 51 % or more of the company's equity. While you hear that the salaries are lower in comparison to PSUs, it is not always true because sometimes PSUs pay more than the ESE service. As the PSUs enjoy autonomy, the better-performing PSUs Maharatna or Navratna PSUs pay better, then comes the Miniratn
