Japan works on strict timelines. For the April 2026 intake (the biggest intake), you must start the application process by August-September 2025. The deadline to submit documents for the COE (Certificate of Eligibility) is usually November 2025.

Yes, Japan accepts study gaps. You need to provide a valid reason. If you took a gap for JEE/NEET preparation or medical reasons, you simply need to submit an explanation letter. If your gap is more than 5 years without any work experience, the visa process becomes stricter.

The UTokyo acceptance rate is 34%. This means, that getting admission to the university as an Indian student is competitive, but possible. The university gives priority to students with great academics and a strong portfolio. Students who do have the same have a very good chance of getting in.
