U of Houston was founded in 1927 and its primary focus was training future teachers. At the time of establishment, this university was Houston Junior College and the classes were held on the Jacinto High School campus. It became the University of Houston in 1934 and later joined the University of Houston system in 1977. Most of the individual colleges at this university have their own traditions ranging from Frontier Fiesta, Cougar Red Friday, Cougar Sign, and Blessings of the Rings, etc.

It is true that Indian students are also required to meet the general and minimum entry requirements while taking admission to Houston University. UH minimum requirements for Indian students are given below:
- UG: The applicants must have passed High school with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher

The official newspaper of UH is known as The Cougar. It is a student-run newspaper and has been established in 1934. The newspaper is one of the university's the oldest traditions.
