Madras University Distance Education Institute admissions are open throughout the year in the academic year stream (Jul to Jun) as well as the calendar year stream (Jan to Dec). For admission to the BSc course, candidates must have secured minimum marks in Class 12 decided by the college. The college accepts the score of CBSE 12th, ISC, Tamilnadu 12th, and various other scores for admission to the BSc and other UG courses. The minimum ISC score required at Madras University Distance Education can be checked on the official website of the college.

Institute of Distance Education University of Madras is not more expensive than the University of Madras. The distance education course fee is less than the fee for the regular college or university. This is due to the fact that offering distance education is not very expensive. The costs like canteen charges, transportation charges, electricity charges, and various other charges can be saved while providing distance education which is not the case for regular college or university.

Madras University IDE does not offer any special discounts or packages for parents during the admission season. Admissions can be done very easily and is available online as well as offline. However, the college is always ready to guide students and parents during the admission process.

The University of Madras founded the Institute of Distance Education, University of Madras in 1981. Currently the college is offering undergraduate, graduate, certificate, and Diploma programmes in a variety of specialisations.
