PhD is a three-year course offered in 38 specialisations offered by Gujarat University. Aspirants are shortlisted for PhD based on the university entrance exam followed by a personal interview. The seat intake is as per PhD ordinance. The fee for the course will be as per Gujarat University rules.

Government of Gujarat has started a scheme called SHODH (scheme of developing high-quality research ) to provide financial assistance to students undergoing qualitative research. Under the scheme, over 1000 full-time research scholars awarded INR 15,000 per month and INR 20,000 contingency expense p.a. in the last five years. Assistance for higher education to students under Mukhymantri Yuva Swavlamban Yojana is also included by Gujarat University.
