IMU Mumbai Highlights 2025

Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a central university established via an Act of Parliament (Act 22) on 14 November 2008. IMU was set up under the patronage of the Ministry of Shipping, the Government of India. Apart from the six campuses (in Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, etc.), IMU also has 18 affiliated institutes, while the university headquarters are located in the Chennai campus. The university ranked 84 among ‘Indian Universities’ by UniRank 2021.

IMU Mumbai Port Campus comprises Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research (LBS CAMSAR) and the Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), Mumbai. LBSCAMSAR is among the premier maritime training institutes in Southeast Asia and is the only institute in India offering additional masters and first-class engineering courses. IMU Mumbai Port campus is situated at South Mumbai Hay Bunder Mumbai. MERI offers pre-sea programmes like BTech in Marine Engineering and PGDME, whereas LBSCAMSAR is known for its post-sea training programmes.

Q: What is the IMU CET counselling registration process?

Candidates who have been issued with IMU CET Rank Certificate are provided with a portal through which they can select the Programme (s) and the Campus (es) where they desire to take admission. Candidates have to register on this portal by making an online payment of INR 10,000/- towards the Counselling Fee. The Counselling Fee is nonrefundable if a seat is allotted on any campus in any programme; else INR 9000 will get refunded. The Candidate should choose multiple options in the order of their preference for:

The best college I have seen ever in my life.

Placements: Placements are very good. According to the previous year’s record, more than 80% got placed. There are a lot of big companies like MOL, Maersk, M.Sc., etc., coming to TMI. Many students from TMI are serving as captains in the merchant navy.

Infrastructure: The infrastructure of our college is the best. We have separate classes for every division, equipped with AC. There are computer labs with good internet. The library is also nice. We can also hire books for a few days. The hostel is equipped with Wi-Fi and water coolers, and all the floors have very fast Wi-Fi and lifts.

Faculty: Faculty members are good and qualified. They keep an eye on each and every student, and there are frequent tests for each subject. The toughness of our exams is moderate, and the passing percentage is 60%. The level of the end-semester exam is tough.

I'll rate Tmi as 10/10 because of its placements, best facilities, and experienced faculty.

Placements: I'm currently in my 2nd year. I got placed in the 1st year only within the 1st semester. The placements here are top-notch in very reputed companies like Chevron, Torm, Stena, and BW. No concern about placements if you don't have any backlog, you can get placed easily.

Infrastructure: Free unlimited Wi-Fi is provided both in classrooms and hostels and in the library. Food quality is excellent and better than that of any other college. A sickbay (medical facilities) is also on the campus with a certified doctor. TMI is known for its events and sports. Every sport like football, cricket, basketball, squash, lawn tennis, table tennis, and various athletic events, is organized.

Faculty: All the faculty members here are highly qualified and have great experience and knowledge, and the quality of teaching is excellent. It makes the students ready for the industry. Semester exams are moderate, depending on your preparation. 50% is the pass criteria.

Other: I chose this course because marine engineering is the best technical degree in which we can work onboard with machines. This course offers a great package too. But the fee for this course is a bit high, and that's the only drawback. The events in TMI are of the next level, they spend a lot on events and fests, and the campus is very neat and clean. Scholarships are also given to the students who performed well in academics.

Review of Tolani Maritime Institute- TMI.

Placements: About 98% of students from the current 2024 batch have been placed in top shipping companies such as M.Sc. Wallem Seapeak, etc., with a lot of them having scored an on-board internship of 6 months. Students who did not get an onboard internship will be completing their internship in PVD before they can board their respective ships and start their careers as fourth engineers. The nautical science batch saw a 100% placement rate as of right now.

Infrastructure: TMI has provided ethernet connectivity services in each room providing high-speed Wi-Fi, but it does not work sometimes and is switched off after 11 PM every day. The academic block has a workshop that has machines for educational purposes such as late machines, milling machines, shape, etc. It has several labs such as electrical and electronics labs, marine machinery labs, a thermal engineering lab, etc. The campus also has two drawing halls for engineering drawing courses two academic blocks and one block consisting of simulation rooms. The campus has a library which has a wide range of books.

Faculty: Faculty members mostly consist of retired chief engineers and captains. They provide good quality teaching. A lot of professors are PhD holders or have achieved some sort of recognition in their respective fields. The course curriculum is mostly relevant to the current demands of the shipping industry and is set by the Indian Maritime University. Semester exams are relatively on the tougher side but can be easily cleared if attention is paid in class and if studies are done regularly.

Other: I selected this course because I wanted to join the Merchant Navy as an engineering officer. The best thing about this course is that it derives its roots from mechanical engineering so we also have touch with the mechanical field. There are several fests which are conducted in this college including Horizons which is the main event and Transtech which is a technical fest conducted every year.

Courses offered by IMU Mumbai Port are divided into two categories viz Pre-Sea and Post-Sea courses. The campus includes BTech in Marine Engineering - four year and a one-yea PGDME, which is conducted at Mumbai Port Campus only. Students with at least 55% aggregate in three-years Diploma in Marine/Mechanical/Electrical/Electrical & Electronics Engineering or four-years Diploma in Shipbuilding Engineering can enrol into the second year of BTech - Marine Engineering via lateral entry.

How many students were placed at IMU Chennai MBA placements?

The number of students placed during IMU Chennai placements is not out yet. Once out it will be updated here. However, as per some unofficial sources IMU Chennai recorded a placement rate of 80-90% with good placement packages.

Is the IMUCET entrance exam compulsory for Indian Maritime University UG courses?

Yes, for most of the UG courses offered at Indian Maritime University, IMUCET is mandatory. DNS, BSc Nautical Science, and B.Tech courses demand an eligible IMUCET rank. One needs to register online, sit for the exam, and undergo counselling. But BBA courses can be exempted from IMUCET based on the

Can I get direct admission to B.Sc at IMU Mumbai?

To get admission to the university, you must clear the Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMUCET) exam held every year. Indian citizens are not eligible for direct admission, and they cannot get the application form from the Mumbai campus of the Indian Maritime University.
