Why should young managers learn data analytics?

Enterprises invest in data management solutions to ensure everyone has access to the right and accurate information whenever and wherever they need it. These enterprises have unprecedented access to data. This data belongs to their customers, vendors, internal systems, and third-party sources, and hence it is rich in value.

Enterprises have become increasingly data-driven over the last decade. These enterprises have adopted a digital system, and as a result, they're generating a lot of data. Also, the data is being generated from different sources such as social media platforms, websites, mobile apps, etc. The data is also being collected through various channels such as email marketing, web forms, chatbots, etc.
Enterprises want to make use of the data to create a business moat for themselves by deriving insights and building a competitive edge for themselves. The old generation managers find it challenging to comprehend the latest technologies and hesitate to work with them.
Enterprises are expecting new incoming managers to know about data analytics and data science technologies to help them achieve the next phase of data-driven growth through their subject matter expertise.
In this blog, we will see why young managers learn and master data analytics and data science for their career growth.

Why are enterprises investing in data?

Enterprises invest in data management solutions to ensure everyone has access to the right and accurate information whenever and wherever they need it. These enterprises have unprecedented access to data. This data belongs to their customers, vendors, internal systems, and third-party sources, and hence it is rich in value. They believe that enterprises can utilize this data to their benefit with the right mindset and tech stack. Therefore, they are investing heavily in data.

Why is data management necessary for enterprises?

While data access, storage, and computing costs have gone down, just having data will not provide enterprise leverage over their competitors. They have to think through the data approach, the proper use cases for data, and build data capabilities that will allow these enterprises to improve their operations' visibility, reliability, security, and scalability. Once they achieve this successfully, they can propel themselves comfortably into a growth phase.

Enterprises want to embrace a data-driven mindset.

Enterprises have realized that only data-driven organizations will be successful in the years to come. However, adopting this new approach of data-driven decision-making and changing the organization's behavior throughout is easier said than done. Top leadership is convinced about the benefits of data analytics. However, they need support from a team of new managers who are not afraid of playing with the system, identifying patterns, and deriving actionable insights. Leaders want these young managers to act as change advocates, take ownership, and be accountable for setting a data-driven culture in their enterprise.
Enterprises are looking at a new breed of managers who are just coming out of their post-graduation to have a data-driven mindset and think & behave differently than traditional managers. They want these new managers to focus more on exploring new possibilities using available petabytes of data in the enterprise.
Enterprises are convinced that their success is fundamentally dependent on data and that data is a critical enterprise asset. They need managers who will treat this data as such.

How can management students prepare themselves for data analytics knowledge?

A data analytics or data science course and a regular management program will help students focus more on analyzing and using data in businesses, including the skills required to use this information.
Management students should also start mastering the art of turning data into understandable graphs and charts. This helps traditional managers understand the numbers who may not be comfortable with new technologies and tools.
Management students should not restrict themselves to approaches, tools, techniques, programming languages, and machine learning models discussed in their data analytics and data science courses. They should try to look for real-world datasets and play with them and see if they can derive some insights from those datasets.
These students can also participate in various webinars and offline data-related events to get introduced to data practitioners and industry leaders. They can learn a great deal from these interactions.
