IIMC was established by the then Minister for Information and Broadcasting in 1965. Initially, the institute organised various training courses mainly for Central Information Service Officers and also undertook research studies. IIMC has a total of five regional centres. IIMC has also established its regional centre in Amravati. IIMC Amravati was established in 2011 and offers PG courses to students. These courses are provided across the Journalism stream. There are hostels available for the students.
