Admissions to NIFT Shillong are merit-based.
Step 1: Candidates first need to pass the NIFT entrance exam, known as the 'written test'.
Stage 2: There is a situation test for the candidates who have passed the previous stage. The selection is made by looking at the overall results in both steps.
For obtaining a master's degree: Candidates first need to pass the NIFT entrance exam, known as the 'written test'. After the screening, successful candidates are interviewed personally. Candidates are chosen by combining their different performances.

The eligibility criteria for courses at NIFT Shillong for the courses on offer are as follows: 

BDes: Candidates are required to have cleared Class 12 to be eligible for the programme. 

MFM: Since the programme is offered at the PG course level, candidates must have completed their Bachelors degree.

Admission to NIFT Shillong is determined by the performance of the candidates in the NIFT exam. Recently, the NIFT Shillong cutoff 2025 is published for the first round. Considering the NIFT Round 1 seat allotment results, the General AI category cutoff rank is ranged between 17525 and 46678. Similarly, the OBC AI category candidates saw a cutoff range, with the first-round ranged between 884 and 5109. The candidate will need the following documents to participate in the NIFT counselling process: Class 12/ degree mark sheet and certificate. Further, if the candidate is seeking admission to the PG course, then the candidate will also have to upload mark sheets and certificates of the qualifying degree examination.

In case of candidates who have appeared for the qualifying exam/ compartment (of final year/semester) and the result is due need to upload the date sheet /admit card for the examination. Other documents required are a Birth certificate, Category certificate, Medical fitness certificate, signed by a Registered Medical Practitioner in the prescribed format in original.

If you belong to the General category under the AI quota, admission to the Master of Fashion Management (MFM) course at NIFT Shilong is not possible with a cutoff rank of 800. In 2025, the maximum cutoff required was 532 till Round 3 for MFM admission among the students belonging to the General AI quota. There is a tough competition amongst candidates to get admission to the courses on offer. Approximately 22,000 applicants take the NIFT entrance exam, with 3,590 seats available for admission (including UG and PG courses) across all the NIFT campuses. This indicates that only about 16% of all applicants are accepted to any NIFT college.

The application was available from 22 Nov to 6 Jan, 2025, with standard fees. Applications were accepted from 7 to 9 Jan 2025, with late fines.
