BTech Admission Process 2022

With the entrance exams being conducted till July, it can be said that the BTech Admission process for the academic session 2022-23 is started for a few states or universities. States like West Bengal and universities like VIT and SRM have already initiated the entrance exam process by making the application forms available for students. The BTech admission process in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) are different from that of private engineering colleges and different states. Some of the key points related to the BTech admission process are elaborated below:

Acceptability of Engineering Entrance Exam Score

The engineering colleges in India do not accept the score of a single entrance test for admission to BTech courses. Though the score of JEE Main is accepted by a majority of colleges and states, there are also colleges and states that conduct their own entrance test. Apart from JEE Main, state-level engineering entrance exams such as MHT CET, BITSAT, APEAMCET, SRMJEEE, VITEEE and many others are also popular among students. However, state-level engineering entrance exams are confined to a specific state.

Multiple Engineering Entrance Exams and Score Acceptability

Some states accept both national and state-level engineering entrance test BTech admissions. For example, In Maharashtra, BTech admissions are based on JEE Main as well as MHT CET. In Himachal Pradesh, 15% of BTech seats are filled through students’ JEE Main score and the rest 85% through the state-level engineering entrance exam conducted by the state government.

Direct Admission without Entrance

A good number of private engineering colleges also conduct admission without an entrance test through management quota. However, BTech fees thus collected from such students is higher than that for students seeking admission through entrance tests.

Centralised Admission Process without Entrance

In some states, BTech admissions are purely based on students’ Class 12 marks/percentage. For example, Anna University in Tamil Nadu conducts a centralised admission process, i.e. Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) for UG engineering courses. It is mandatory for all students in the state to take part in TNEA to secure a seat under the state or concession quota.

Which is the Most Popular Engineering Entrance Exam for BTech Admissions?

The most popular UG engineering entrance exam among students is Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main. In 2022, it is likely that the JEE Main will be conducted in four sessions. However, the official notification regarding the number of sessions and exam dates is yet to be released by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The exam is a gateway for admission to NITs, IIITs and Government-Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). JEE Main also acts as a preliminary exam for JEE Advanced which is conducted for admission to IITs.

If a student wants to get a BTech admission within his/her state, it is better to aim for the state-level engineering entrance exam such as TS EAMCET for Telangana, AP EAMCET for Andhra Pradesh, MHT CET for Maharashtra and others.

BTech Admission Eligibility Criteria

The BTech eligibility criteria are almost the same across the country, and the basic requirements needed to join a BTech course are as follows:

  • Students must have passed Class 12 with Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics as mandatory subjects
  • Students appearing for the Class 12 board exam in the same year of appearing in engineering entrance tests are also eligible
  • Students must score at least 50% of marks in Class 12 to be eligible for admission to BTech courses in engineering colleges across the country. Students belonging to reserved categories such as SC/ST get relaxation of up to 5% in the minimum qualifying marks
  • For the engineering streams such as Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology, students who studied Biology as one of the subjects in Class 12 are also eligible
