Chose Management for Masters after completing my Engineering to make a great combo, says Jayalakshmi
I always wanted to pursue Science ever since I started understanding the concepts of Chemistry, and this made my choice easier for Class 11 and 12, when it was time to choose the core subjects of study. I was also good at Physics, so, I finally opted for Science stream after the board exams. After passing out, I did my Engineering in Electronics Communication that was the turning point in my life because I realised that I have gained technical knowledge about circuits, microwave, radar and programming everything seems to be good till it is in books.
Now, it was time to work on my management skills. I was sure the technical and management skills would make a great combo so I decided to pursue post-graduation in management. I did deep research on the internet about various management colleges, compared them on the basis of their curriculum offered, curriculum design which means they focus more on theory or practical, placements, eligibility, etc. There was one such institute that fulfilled all my demands, it was Shanti Business School (SBS). The institute is AICTE approved and their pedagogy in more of industry-embedded and relevant. Also, the experienced faculty with both industry and academia background acted as a cherry on the cake. The School also offers 100 per cent placements. All these reasons collectively made me choose the School for my management studies.
As a part of the admission process, all eligible applicants need to undergo a written entrance test followed by an interview round. To prepare for the exam, I did not join any coaching classes, rather I decided to prepare for the test on my own. The result were declared on the same and I cleared both the rounds. In parallel, I was also trying Velammal, Jeppiar college in Chennai, Tamil Nadu but SBS’s result was declared first and also the school is based out of Ahmedabad which was an added advantage for me. My family resides here. So, I finally joined Shanti Business School.
I still remember the initial days of my college life where everything seemed to be new as I was from the technical background wherein I was taught to work individually (doing individual projects and presentations) and when I came to a management college I understood the importance of teamwork. The first assignment was a group assignment in Operations Management. Personality-wise I am an introvert, it is difficult for me to mingle with others. Later, as days passed especially after my internship, I realised a gradual change in my personality from introvert to an ambivert, thanks to the specialisation (HR) which I opted in my PGDM programme. During my internship period, I got to build a network with new people and got to know new things to learn. I always assumed that tasks can be better performed individually but I was mistaken. Teamwork facilitates brainstorming, gives birth to ideas and this is when I realised the importance of team management skills. Organisation behaviour, Performance management, HR analytics, Compensation & Reward systems were a few classes that I really enjoyed learning the most.
I am also an active participant in various sports events, tech events and social activities that are conducted on campus. My team and I have also won certificates in Bauddhika, the biggest Tech Quiz of Shanti Business School.
