IMT prepares its students for the corporate world: Sarthak Sahoo
I was always inquisitive about the functionalities of a car. This curiosity generated interest in Science, and opted for the same in Class XI. I always believed that Science and Mathematics were two subjects that were my greatest strengths. I even opted for Computer Science as a subject seeing its increasing relevance in the present industry scenario. The combination of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science was an ideal base for my graduation. Since I wanted to pursue Engineering in future, my options became even more clearer.
Studying these subjects helped me develop a scientific logic towards how and why things happened in a certain manner.
My attraction towards numbers is the biggest reason why I have opted for Finance as a specialisation in MBA. I am always fascinated by the way financial institutions function, and how they deal with the financial assets. Finance is something that teaches how money is handled and how markets perform. Also, Finance as a subject utilises statistics as a potential tool for analysis. Today, market trends are defined by studying behavioral finance. Also, the wide range of job prospects offer an enticing proposition.
How I cracked college admission
To get into IMT, I had to go through a rigorous selection process. I appeared for all the national level entrance tests like CAT, SNAP, XAT, MAT, CMAT, NMAT and IIFT. On the basis of the scores secured in these exams, the college sends out call letters to shortlisted applicants who score the minimum cut-off percentile. These candidates have to go through a process of critical thinking test, group activity and personal interview to get selected. I was keen to keep my options open for applying to different colleges.
But I took online coaching offered by T.I.M.E., and appeared for the mock exams conducted by the institute. The postal coaching material provided questions of different levels for different entrance tests. T.I.M.E. has quality material which is at par with the difficulty level of entrance examinations. Also, they provide proper analysis of their All-INDIA mocks which every student can take to prepare for the final test.
Few other colleges I was trying for were-XUB-XIMB, IBS Hyderabad, IFMR and SIOM.
What I gained from my college experience
In college, I spend most of my time attending classes. In every trimester, we have an average of 8 subjects commonly pertaining to areas like Finance and Accounting, Marketing, Human Resources, Economics, Operations and Information Technology. These subjects are taught to us in the first year i.e., the first three trimesters. In the second year, students are allowed to choose a major and a minor specialisation. On the basis of the specialisation, students choose elective papers in the fourth, fifth and sixth trimesters.
I enjoy attending most of the sessions as there is always scope for further improvement in terms of managerial skill and knowledge. Also, the case study approach helps us to build a particular point of view. This helps us prepare for the problems in the corporate world.
In the free time, we engage in different activities organised by different forums and committees. There are six core committees and several forums which are managed by students. IMT Nagpur is also one of the few student-driven campuses in the country. It also gives students enough time for entrepreneurial ventures. There are already various student ventures like Campus Oxygen (CO2), FnF and Co-Op in the campus. These student ventures primarily provide services to the students. I take part in various sports events, quizzes and other various forum events taking place.
The experience till now has been fabulous. As a person, I am more aware of the use of the technical knowledge in real life situations. The learnings I have received have helped me become a better person. I believe in the coming year more such experiences will come my way and help me get better.
