Mystory@Vaishakh Iyer: How I chose my course and college

Mystory@Vaishakh Iyer

I was a part of the elite crowd in school which scored above 90% in SSC Boards. It was pretty big back in 2009. Naturally, being a top scorer from the batch, people expected me to take up Science, which of course what I did. But I had my doubts. Not because I was not interested in studying Science, but because I always wanted to do something related to Commerce. But, then again, I thought of keeping my options open. With Science, there was an option to pursue Commerce in Graduation as well as Engineering. So, I finally chose Science in class 11and12. I had Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Electronics as my core subjects.

Coming to my Graduation, I had almost decided to do BBA, as it was something which I had decided during my school days. But then again, my dad said something to me which made me choose engineering. He straight away told me that I can go for MBA after Engineering.

As always, my dad was right. It was the best decision for me to do Engineering. It not only enhanced my technical skills, but also taught me how to cope with challenges in the future. I never regretted pursuing Engineering.

I am finally pursing MBA from SIES College of Management Studies, now. The college is ranked among top 5 colleges in Maharashtra under MAH–CET. Naturally; SIES College of Management Studies was one of my top five choices to study MBA at.

How I cracked college admission

I quit my 6-month old job a month before MAH-CET exam.

I prepared for three entrance exams, CAT, NMAT and MAH–CET. The scores of CAT and NMAT were not great. So, I decided to give myself one last chance by taking MAH–CET. I was determined to get into top 5 colleges in Maharashtra. Not only because they have great ROI but also all of them are situated in Mumbai where I reside. I quit my 6-month old job a month before MAH-CET exam. I had joined coaching classes during my 3rd year of Engineering. So to brush up my knowledge, I did 2 mock series. I practiced mocks every day. Solved it and analyzed it every day as I had limited amount of preparation time.

CET comes under DTE regulations where we had to fill the colleges according to our preference. I just filled top 5 colleges which also included SIES College of Management Studies. Finally, the day of admission arrived and I got into SIES College of Management Studies.

I was, of course, aiming for other colleges too, but we can’t have everything which we aspire for. And SIESCOMS is not a low-key college. So, I was pretty happy and satisfied that I made it to SIESCOMS. I was also happy because I would finally be able to do MBA, my dream since childhood.

What I gained from my college experience

I am currently a member of Branding committee of my college.

Our college time varies every day. We are intimated about our timetable just couple of days before. We have conferences once or twice every week which have famous personalities in speakers list. As our program comes under Mumbai University, the college strictly emphasizes on attendance. But, the college supports us in every way whenever there is some event, competitions which take place during our lectures.

I love to attend all the Marketing related events, conferences and lectures, because it always interactive and both the teachers and the students show a lot of enthusiasm which makes the marketing lectures absolutely knowledgeable. Apart from this, as I am currently in 1st year, we have subjects from every stream like Financial Management, Human Resource Management, Costing, Corporate Social Responsibility etc. All classes are equally enjoyable as all our faculties have a huge experience in the corresponding industries as well as teaching experience.

I am currently a member of Branding committee of my college. I am also our college’s representative at Shiksha.com.

I can relate to many candidates or should I say confused souls looking for guidance with respect to their career. I am thankful to Shiksha.com for making me a part of it and giving me a chance to guide the candidates.

I am also a part of Nivara, The Team a NGO which helps underprivileged people to get education, employment and health opportunities. I am currently a part of social media team of Nivara, The Team.

Now coming down to my college, SIES College of Management Studies has given a much needed personality change. While the engineering college helped me become mature, the MBA college is helping me make my personality more presentable.

Finally, I would like to conclude my diary with a proverb, “If hard work is your weapon, then success will be your slave.”
