Students’ Speak: First-hand account of internship in Data Science

1 min readUpdated on Dec 3, 2019 12:48 IST

The business objective of my summer internship project was to create a content-based recommender system for one of their concepts. This project was conceived as a part of landmarks initiative to move into the e-commerce space.

During my post-graduation diploma in Big Data Analytics, I got an opportunity to intern as a Data Science at Data Labs, a division of Landmark Group. Data Labs at Landmark was created to leverage the huge data the retail giant had in terms of transactional and secondary sources.

The proof of content (POC) of the project was completed in a duration of three months, at the end of which the team understood the limitations in terms of resources they had. The needed to work on faster processors, as even a 12 GB RAM computer had a difficult time training a single Convolutional neural network (CNN) model over thousands of high definition images.

CNN backed by Keras Library in Python formed the backbone of the project. Using this, thousands of images went into creating three distinct models predicting attributes of apparel.

The Big Data Analytics course at GIM is an amalgamation of business knowledge and Data Science to make sound data-driven decisions. This aspect of the course helped me understand the business problem from an end to end perspective, and brainstorm ideas with the data science team to generate methodologies to tackle obstacles.

The project was a great learning opportunity, especially in understanding the depth of data-driven applications, enhancing my coding skills and working with senior data scientists in the industry.

I am indebted to all my mentors both at GIM and Landmark for the valuable guidance and timely support which made me achieve this challenging feat.
