Amid pandemic, the alternate assessment policy may not be foolproof, despite all the reservations against the policy pertaining to subjectivity and ambivalence, but is the best possible strategy.

With the country reeling under the second wave of coronavirus pandemic, the Central board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had to announce the cancellation of CBSE 10th exams 2021. This move necessitated the board to come out with an alternate assessment policy for the tabulation of CBSE 10th results.

According to the alternate CBSE 10th evaluation strategy, the students will be assessed out of maximum 100 marks for each subject. The internal Assessment for 20 marks will be as per the existing policy while the CBSE came up with an innovative idea for distribution of remaining 80 marks in each subject.

Due to the cancellation of the CBSE Class 10th Board examinations, the assessment of 80 marks will be done by the school:

  • based on the marks scored by the students in the different tests/exams conducted by the school during the year, and
  • the marks should be in consonance with the past performance of the school in Class 10th Board examinations.

The CBSE will consider the following exams for awarding the marks to student:

Category of exams

Marks

Periodic tests/Unit tests

10

Half-yearly/Midterm exams

30

Pre-board exams

40

Internal assessment

20

Total

100

In case schools have conducted more than one test/exam within each category, the result committee may fix the weightage to be given to each test/exam within the category subject to the overall maximum marks for that category.

While the strategy could be the best possible solution in the current scenario, it cannot be ruled out that it still not 100 per cent reliable. Students who, themselves or their families, were struggling with the virus could not appear for the internal assessments, little did they know that all these marks will later be counted for preparing the final results. Thus, the concern shared by stakeholders is that this policy leaves room for subjectivity and ambivalence.

Schools have been instructed to ensure that the marks awarded align with the average of schools’ best performance in the past three years.

The board has asked schools to form an eight-member result committee consisting of principal and seven teachers for finalizing the results. Five teachers from the school should be from Mathematics, Social Science, Science and two languages, and two teachers from neighbouring schools should be co-opted by the school as the external members of the committee.

According to media reports, Shayama Chona, former principal of DPS R.K.Puram said, β€œThere is too much importance given to exams in our country. Class 10 results are not the deciding factor in a student’s career. They should be ranked basis their performance in assessments conducted throughout the year.”

Despite all the reservations, stakeholders are of the opinion that the alternative assessment policy for CBSE 10th is the best possible strategy in the current scenario.

CBSE 10th Result 2021 is expected to be announce in July 2021 on the official website.
