IIT Bombay's Quantum Sensing Hub

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has commenced the activities of the Qmet Tech Foundation, a Section 8 (not-for-profit) company established under the National Quantum Mission (NQM). Focused on Quantum Sensing and Metrology, Qmet acts as a leadership hub for translational research, fund management, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among 16 member institutes.

The kickoff meeting brought together researchers to establish a shared vision, outline milestones, and explore collaborative frameworks. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of DST, with the participation of IIT Bombay's Dean (R&D) and Dean (Strategy), highlighting the institute’s unwavering commitment to the growth and success of the Qmet Tech Foundation.

“The establishment of Qmet Tech Foundation marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards quantum excellence. By uniting some of the country’s brightest minds, we aim to create groundbreaking advancements in Quantum Sensing and Metrology that will not only benefit India but also contribute to the global quantum ecosystem,” stated Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, DST during his address.

Prof Kasturi Saha, Project Director of Qmet Tech Foundations said, “Qmet aims to lead globally in quantum sensing, metrology, and imaging by advancing technology, workforce training, and innovation. It seeks to bridge research and applications, fostering international collaborations, driving transformative solutions in healthcare, national security, and scientific discovery, and positioning India as a quantum revolution leader.”

Kiran Shesh, CEO, Qmet Tech Foundation says “The Qmet Hub structure is intricate, comprising 16 institutes and 40 researchers located across India. A key factor driving its success is the strong emphasis on collaboration, cooperation, and effective communication. The kick-off meeting is designed to create a shared sense of purpose and inspire enthusiasm to achieve the common goal.”

This is especially important since many of the concerns of the Humanities and Social Sciences requireamulti-disciplinary approach. The programme combines course work to build student competence in specific areas, research training, and researchmodules for independent work. Students are expected to carry out a successful programme of research within the duration of the programme.
