IIT Hyderabad researchers have come up with a way to track mobile phone usage. Read further to know more.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad researchers has developed dataset and Aritificial Intelligence-based algorithms that can detect the mobile phone usage. The research will help in monitoring and automatically detecting mobile-phone usage, as with time, people addiction to mobile phones has increased along with the potential of their harmful use.

While talking about the research,ย  Dr. Sparsh Mittal who led this research along with Ms. Poonam Rajput and Mr. Subhrajit Nag said,"it is impossible to manually detect the mobile-phone at large-scale. Hence, there is a need to develop automated techniques for this purpose. We believe that our technique has immense potential. It can help improve productivity by preventing excess or untimely usage of the mobile phone. It can help in avoiding accidents due to distraction during driving.โ€

Dr. Sparsh was with the CSE Department, IIT Hyderabad, for most of the duration of this research-study and has recently joined IIT Roorkee. The results of this work have been accepted in the peer-reviewed conference "International Conference on Smart Objects and Technologies for Social Good 2020", held at Belgium 2020.

Research Scholar Poonam Pandey said that algorithms based on deep-learning to detect mobile-phone usage was used in the research process. These algorithms achieved nearly 99 per cent accuracy on the Kaggle Driver dataset and 96 per cent accuracy on the IITH-DMU dataset.

Meanwhile, IIT Hyderabad has also signed an MoU with the University of Hyderabad to stimulate and facilitate the development of collaborative teaching and mutually beneficial research activities. The MoU was signed by Prof. B. S. Murty, IITH, and Shri P Sardar Singh, Registrar, UoH in the presence of VC, UoH, and officials from both the institutions to promote and enhance academic interaction between UoH and IITH.
