Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has praised the passage of the IIM Amendment Bill enabling IIM Guwahati's establishment. ₹555 crore has been approved to boost higher education in Northeast India, with mentorship from IIM Ahmedabad.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has lauded the successful introduction and passage of the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which officially paves the way for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati. The central govt has also allocated ₹555 crore to boost higher education infrastructure and opportunities in the northeastern region of India.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Pradhan highlighted that IIM Guwahati, mentored by IIM Ahmedabad, will bring world-class management education to the region, fostering innovation, research, and leadership development. “This is a transformative moment not just for Assam but for the entire Northeast. We are dedicated to ensuring equitable access to quality education, and IIM Guwahati will serve as a beacon for aspiring students and future industry leaders,” he said.
The new institute, set to operate initially from a temporary campus near Guwahati with a permanent campus planned at Palasbari in Kamrup district, will complement the region’s existing educational ecosystem, including IIM Shillong, and further elevate Assam’s status as an emerging education hub.
Minister Pradhan in a tweet emphasized the importance of collaborative mentorship from IIM Ahmedabad in establishing academic rigor and administrative excellence at the new institute. This alliance is expected to help IIM Guwahati align with national standards and global benchmarks, preparing students to meet the evolving challenges of the global economy.
He added that the Education Ministry remains committed to replicating such models across India to ensure inclusive growth and to nurture a generation of skilled professionals and entrepreneurs ready to contribute to India’s socio-economic development.
