The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai, in collaboration with The Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI), has launched a pioneering Executive MBA programme in Maritime, Logistics, and Supply Chain Management. This two-year programme represents a novel industry-academia collaboration designed to address the shortage of skilled business leaders in a sector valued at $450 billion.
Inaugural Event Marks New Era in Maritime Education
At a launch event held in Mumbai on September 2, Captain M.P. Bhasin, Chairman of CMMI, emphasized that India previously lacked an executive MBA that integrates logistics and supply chain management with maritime expertise. “This MBA programme signifies a pivotal step in enhancing maritime education and management standards in India,” Captain Bhasin stated. He highlighted the programme’s goal to develop next-generation leaders who are well-versed in navigating the complexities of global logistics and supply chain management.
Programme Details and Structure
The Executive MBA is structured with 80% online learning and 20% offline sessions, targeting middle and senior-level professionals. The degree will be awarded by IIM Mumbai. Eligibility requirements include a graduation degree plus three years of sailing experience for mariners, and graduation plus five years of work experience for non-mariners. The course fee is INR 15 lakh, with an initial payment of Rs10 lakh and the remaining Rs5 lakh due after 12 months.

Professor Vivekanand Khanapuri from IIM Mumbai noted the institution’s extensive expertise in supply chain management and its commitment to integrating knowledge across various domains. He underscored the programme’s potential to reduce logistics costs and contribute to India’s goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy.
The course has received support from industry leaders like Captain B.K. Tyagi, Chairman and Managing Director of Shipping Corporation of India Ltd, and Arun Sharma, Executive Chairman of Indian Register of Shipping. They praised the programme for its timely relevance and potential to significantly impact career growth in the maritime and logistics sectors.
Addressing Industry Needs
IIM Mumbai is a good institution when it comes to academics as claimed by its alumni. Faculty at IIM Mumbai are well-qualified and the students of this institute get a chance to work on research projects along with the professors. IIM Mumbai has been ranked 6th under ‘Management’ category by the NIRF in 2025.
Earlier, there was no IIM in Mumbai. But now NITIE Mumbai has been renamed to IIM Mumbai. The institute has been ranked 7 under ‘Management’ category by the NIRF in 2023. NITIE has always been at par with IIMs when it comes to Management category rankings. As per the report by Hindustan Times "As per the gazette published by the Ministry of Law and Justice, NITIE will continue to function until a new board is constituted for IIM under this act. After the constitution of a new board under this act, the old board will dissolve."
Quadraant Legal’s Pankaj Kapoor clarified that while the programme includes maritime elements, its primary focus is on logistics and supply chain management. Kapoor emphasized the growing demand for skilled professionals in this sector, with the industry expected to reach $520 billion soon. The programme aims to bridge the gap in managerial expertise, preparing graduates to meet the evolving challenges of the industry.
