COVID-19 Impact: The Government of Uttarakhand has decided to shut all the universities in the state until further orders. According to the reports, the decision has been taken in view of the rising novel coronavirus cases. On Monday, April 3, Joint Secretary for Higher Education, MM Semwal announced the decision regarding the closure of the educational institutions. Earlier, the educational institutes were announced to be closed until April 30.

The government made this clear that the order is applicable for all private and government universities in the state. The minister also clarified that in order to continue the teaching-learning process, the varsities, however, can continue with online classes. The decision came following the orders released by the Education Ministry. The Ministry of Education asked all centrally funded institutions including IITs, NITs, IIITs, Central Universities, etc. to postpone all offline exams scheduled for May. It also stated that the Universities can go on with the online examination as per the schedule.

Meanwhile, the cases in Uttarakhand continue to show an alarming upward trend. As many as 5,403 cases were reported in the state on Monday, taking the tally of total active cases to 54,436. 128 deaths were also reported. To counter the wave, the government has ramped up its hospital infrastructure. The hospitals have also received directions to treat patients that are showing COVID19 symptoms, even if they test negative.

Considering the devastating results of the second wave of the novel coronavirus, many states including Delhi, Rajasthan, etc. have also preponed their summer vacations in schools and universities considering the safety and health of the students and staff.
