Biotechnology depends on many basic laboratory techniques of microbiology, while further development of microbiology is quite dependent on biotechnological methods, it is quite common to share the same job opportunities. Having said that having a Biotechnology degree opens up many more doors, in various fields like industrial processes, management jobs while microbiology jobs are more research oriented. You also have an option of doing an MBA in Biotechnology, which a new and emerging field of work. Regarding jobs, both fields seem at par, for PhDs in India Biotechnology does seem to have an edge. However, it is up to you which field you would like to follow. Follow what you have the most interest in because that is inadvertently the field you will succeed at the most, no matter of the numbers and trends. Regards.

B.Sc. In Biotechnology is a 3- year under-graduate course, involving an advanced study of the cellular and bi-molecular processes for development of a variety of technologies and products that contribute to improving peoples lives and health. The course is divided across 6 semesters, of six months each, and the basic eligibility for applying to the course is 10+2 qualification in the Science stream, completed from a recognised educational board. The course is offered in India at an average fee ranging between INR 1 and 3 lacs, varying across institutes. Admission to B.Sc. Biotechnology is entrance exam based. For admission to the course, eligible candidates are needed to qualify a relevant entrance examination, conducted at any of institute, state and national levels.
