Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed established Guwahati University. Established in 1948, the university currently functions with 340+ affiliated colleges along with 35+ PG Departments. The university houses an Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) and a constituent Law College. Guwahati University has been ranked 36 by the NIRF in 2022. The university has also been accredited by NAAC with an A grade. The university offers UG, PG Diploma Certificate and doctoral courses through 39 PG departments and a constituent Law college. Additionally, it also has 341 colleges affiliated with it that offer UG and PG courses in the faculty members of Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, and Engineering.

An international law degree from countries like the US, UK, or Australia may be recognised in India, but the extent of recognition and applicability may depend on various factors such as the degree programme, the institution, and the field of law. In India, to practice law, one needs to have a law degree from a recognised university and must also pass the Bar Council of India (BCI) examination. As per the BCI rules, foreign law graduates may be eligible to practice law in India, subject to certain conditions such as completing an additional one-year course in Indian law from a recognised institution, and clearing the BCI examination. It is also important to note that the practice of law in India is governed by the Advocates ACT 1961, and only Indian citizens can enroll as advocates in India. Foreign nationals with a law degree may be eligible to work in law firms or as legal consultants in India, subject to the relevant visa and work permit requirements. In summary, an international law degree may be recognised in India, but it may not automatically qualify a person to practice law in India.
