Yes, you've heard correct that after completing your Diploma you can seek admission directly into the second year of B.Tech into your respective trade.

Your query us quite good. A student with Diploma in aeronautical engineering branch will be definitely eligible for admission in lateral mode for graduation in aeronautical engineering branch. Unfortunately problem comes up in the mindset of states. Almost every state has restricted these admissions to students who are domicile of that state. Hence if you do not have domicile of Tamil Nadu, I feel it would be quite tough to get admission in MIT, Chennai. You can refer to the eligibility documents on the website of Anna University.
