The book of choice will differ from person to person. However, the books prescribed by CBSE are the best. Once you have exausted these, then you can think of additional books.

GATE is aptitude test for getting admission to PG courses in engineering in India. It has nothing to do for getting admission in Institutions abroad.

For getting admission to marine Engineering, procedure is same as that for any other branch of engineering. You will have to appear and clear one or the other entrance exam. JEE Mains is for NIT and JEE Advanced is for IIT's.

According to the eligibility criteria for JEE paper 2, the minimum percentage required for getting admission in various IITs, NITs, and CFTIs is 75%. You are still eligible to appear in exam and you can use your marks in JEE paper 2 to get admission in other good colleges of India. So don't give up.

In India, it's not possible to jump branch. For doing PG in Aeronautical engineering, you need to have done graduation in that branch.
