Himachal Pradesh University is recognised by UGC and NAAC. Also, HPU has a total of 7 institutes which include the Department of Evening Studies, HPU Business School, University Institute of Technology, HPU College of Business Studies, University Institute of Legal Studies, Institute of Tribal Studies, Institute of Vocational Studies. Since, it is a public state university, the programme fee is very less. 

Taking admission in HPU will also provide placement opportunities to students. The university conducts placement drive every year. According to Himachal Pradesh University NIRF report 2024, the median package offered during HPU Shimla BTech and MBA placements 2023 stood at INR 4 LPA and INR 5.5 LPA, respectively.

Himachal Pradesh University has well-educated faculty. Most of the faculty are PhD and Masters degree holders. HPU Shimla also invites faculty for guest lectures and offer an opportunity to students to interact with some of the best personalities. Mandatory subjects in 12th - Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics Lateral Entry Eligibility Candidate must have completed Diploma of 3 years in IT or CSE (after 10+2 or matriculation) preferably from Himachal Pradesh State Board of Technical Education or B.Sc. degree with Mathematics and Physics with minimum of 60% marks in aggregate from recognised University. For sponsored category candidate must have 3 years of experience of working in Government sector /Public Sector Units /Industry related to Information Technology/ Computer Science Engineering. In the first year of the BTech degree at HPU Shimla candidates go through the concepts that they've already studied in their Class 11 and Class 12. This is done so that students know the basics of the concepts that they're going to use during their time at the course. The first year also ensures that students coming from different boards are on the same level about necessary concepts required for engineering. Candidates who have taken admission into the university in the latent entry BTech programme do not have to go through these concepts in the first year.

Candidates who have completed a bachelor's degree of a University established by law in India (with the subject of study for MSc as one of the subjects) in 2nd Division or with at least 45% aggregate (40% aggregate in case of SC/ST candidates) or Honours in the subject concerned are eligible to apply for the MSc programme at Himachal Pradesh University. Aspirants should hold the documents proving their eligibility for verification at the time of admission.

HPU offers scholarships as financial aid based on Economically backward category to students who belong to categories such as BPL for continuing their higher education. Sports scholarship to 16 students belonging from the teaching department for outstanding performance in sports, and cultural activity scholarship is awarded to 10 students for their performance in academic and cultural activities.
