IISc Bangalore Hostel and Residential Facilities
Indian Institute of Science, one of the premier research institutes of India, is a fully residential institute. There are many independent hostel blocks, some of which are for ladies and some for gents. These hostel blocks together can house about 3000 plus students who stay on campus. The hostels are nestled in lush green surroundings with open courtyards in most of them. No two hostels are alike. There is also a sufficient parking facility for bicycles and two-wheelers. Limited accommodation for married students is also available on campus. There are single and double room apartments for married students to stay with their families.
Guest rooms for visiting parents of students are also available. The hostel complex also houses small utility shops like a bakery, laundry, cycle repair, hair cutting and pharmacy.There are four different Mess facilities for students to choose from, depending on their tastes. Two of the messes serve only vegetarian dishes, and two other messes are combo messes that serve both veg and non-veg. All in all, the hostel life in IISc is one of the most enviable among the student community, providing the students with a conducive atmosphere for research and learning.

IISc Bangalore Library
JRD Tata Memorial Library, popularly known as the Indian Institute of Science Library, is one of the best Science and Technology libraries in India. Started in 1911, as one of the first three departments in the Institute, it has become a precious national resource centre in the field of Science and Technology. The library receives annually about 10-12% grant of the total budget of the institute. About 95% of the library grant is spent towards periodical subscriptions, which is unparalleled in this part of the globe. With a collection of nearly 5 lakh volumes of Books, Periodicals, Technical Reports, and standards, the JRD Tata Memorial Library, located in about 5,000 sq.mts. The area is one of the finest in the country. Currently, it subscribes to over 14,000 current periodicals.
IISc Bangalore Sports Facilities
All of IISc's sports facilities are located on a piece of land adjacent to the main campus. It is called the gymkhana. We have a cricket and a football ground. Hockey goalposts are set up in the cricket ground as and when needed. There is a running track around the football ground. We have volleyball and basketball grounds too. In addition to all these, a big badminton court hall housing three wooden courts, several table tennis tables, a chess room, a carrom room, a snooker and billiards room, a gym and an aerobics room are housed in the gymkhana building. Kung-fu is also taught in the gymkhana area.
