Q. Is IISc better than Harvard?

A. As per the details collated from various sources on the internet, IISc Bengaluru is one of the ‘fastest-rising’ South Asian universities. Moving closer to the global Top 150, it has gained 31 places to reach 155th position in 2023 year’s QS World University Rankings. However, it remains very far away from Harvard in the ranking position. Additionally, no matter how good of an institute IISC Bangalore is in India, it is still far away from Harvard owing to the ground of streams offered by the latter. With 15 schools under it, Harvard offers education in the field of Science, Arts, Business & Management, Medicine, Engineering, Law, Design and many other streams while IISc Bengaluru’s major focus is on Science and Research. Having said that, IISc is a great choice for research-oriented education in India and ranks at number two and number one under NIRF 2022’s Overall and Universities categories, respectively.

Q. PhD: How do I get admitted to IISc Bangalore for PhD?

A. To be eligible for PhD, graduates of any course with a minimum duration of four years, from any approved CFTI must have completed their course with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 out of 10 or its equivalent. However, for students with a basic UG and PG qualification, the eligibility and selection criteria is as follows:

  • Eligibility: A pass in BE/ BTech/ MSc or relevant UG/ PG degree
  • Selection: GATE/ NET JRF/ GPAT

Q. BTech: Is BTech available in IISc Bangalore?

A. Yes, IISc Bangalore offers a four-year BTech in Mathematics and Computing. More details about BTech are as follows:

  • For the academic batch of 22, a total of 52 seats were available for the BTech programme
  • 20% of seats are reserved for the supernumerary quota over and above the approved intake for the course and will be provided to female candidates. The break-up is as follows: 40 + 8 (20% supernumerary seat for female) + 4 (10% Foreign nationals/OCI)].
  • To apply for BTech, eligible students can click on the ‘Apply Online’ option under the ‘Prospective Students’’ tab on the course website, i.e., https://btech-ug.iisc.ac.in/MathandComputing/
  • In case the result for the JEE Advanced through which the candidate wishes to apply is not declared, students can select ‘JEE Advanced exam’ from drop-down in the application form and choose No’ for the question ‘Examination result declared?’

Q. BTech: Which is better IIT Bombay or IISc Bangalore for BTech?

A. A comparison of IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore for their BTech course based on fee and the median salary is as follows:

College Name Fee Structure Median Salary Package
IISc Bangalore INR 8 lakh INR 13.5 LPA
IIT Bombay INR 8 lakh - INR 20 lakh INR 8.4 LPA - INR 26.64 LPA

Based on the above comparison, the fee and median salary offered at IISc Bengaluru is low as compared to IIT Bombay. However, if we look at both these institutes from the perspective of the specialisations offered at their campus and their approach towards technical and research-based approach, IIT Bombay will be considered a better option, especially for the BTech programme.

  • While there are nine specialisations under BTech at IIT Bombay, IISc Bangalore offers BTech only under Mathematics & Computing subject.
  • IITs are more industry-focused, whereas IISc is more research-focused

The final decision still lies with the students and the decision should be made based on their interest area and career goal.

Overall, it is the best university in India.

Placements: A majority of students go for higher studies, and very few sit for placements. They grab very good placements. The highest package offered is 40 LPA in B.Sc. From this year onwards, the management is focusing on all aspects of jobs, internships, and co-curricular activities. Grabbing a job and an internship is really easy here, but most people don't go for it. The placement cell is the same for UG and PG courses. No placements but fantastic research opportunities.

Placements: We don't have any direct placements from college for this course, because no one usually joins this course in hope of placements. All the students go for Masters course or some competitive exam like UPSC, banking, etc. However, we can ask any professor to join us for internships.

Infrastructure: The campus Infrastructure is old but very beautiful and well maintained as well. We have a gymkhana that has all the necessary equipment. Billiards, tennis, badminton, aerobics, kung fu, etc. Available here. We have a football, cricket and basketball team for participation in many sports meet. There is a nice swimming pool here.
