Sikkim University is a central university established in 2007 under an Act of Parliament of India. It is located in Gangtok and is recognised by UGC. Sikkim University has 10 affiliated colleges located in Sikkim. These colleges include institutions such as Damber Singh College, Government College Rhenock, and Namchi Government College, among others. The university also has a permanent campus at Yangang in the Namchi district. SU has collaborations with different institutions and organisations, including CABI E-UK, NIAISTBR, and the Indian Army for skill development.

The Sikkim University campus spreads across 300 acres of land. Sikkim University has several facilities for its students. The facilities include well-furnished and spacious classrooms, medical and sports facilities, etc. The other facilities provided to the students of the institute include:
- Central Library: The Sikkim University library is known as the Teesta-Indus Central Library that includes quality books, journals and magazines of national and international level. It is situated within Sikkim University and spans over 9,000 square feet, with the capacity to house approximately 70,000 books.
- Hostel: 8 (4 each) seperate hostels for boys and girls are equipped with water purifiers, common rooms, recreation rooms, mess, TV, laundry services, security, and surveillance systems. Staying in the university's hostels is mandatory for outstation students.
- Health Centre: Sikkim University offers medical facilities to all its students, teaching and non-teaching staff. Charak Health center is four bedded units (2 for male and 2 female), 2 OPDs, Procedure room, central store and dispensary. This is manned by the Chief Medical Officer, Senior Medical Officer, 2 Staff nurses, Nursing Attendant, Pharmacist, MTS and Ambulance Driver.
- Gymnasium: The university is fully equipped and open 6 days a week for students and staff. The gym has different shifts that have been maintained for male and female users. There are respective gender trainers in the gym to monitor and provide continuous supervision to the gym members. The university provides free bus service to its students at fixed intervals.

Sikkim University is building a world-class campus on a plot of land measuring 300 acres at Yangang in the South District of Sikkim and located 56 kilometers from Gangtok. The Government of Sikkim handed over a major portion of land for the purpose and the former President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, in his capacity as the Visitor of the university, laid the foundation stone of the campus on April 16, 2013 in the august presence of the Governor and the Chief Minister of Sikkim.
Sikkim University has nine hostels – four for girls and five for boys. The hostels are located on hired premises, and the infrastructure is modest. Further expansion of hostel facilities is not possible due to difficulty in finding appropriate space and availability of wardens. Demand for seats in these hostels is very high. While the University makes utmost efforts to accommodate as many applicants as possible it cannot ensure 100% accommodation in its hostels. Admission to hostels will be provided for one semester subject to renewal on compliance with hostel rules and regulations of the University. Application for admission to hostel accommodation can be made online at the time of filling out the online admission form. Hostel accommodation is based on merit, availability of seats, departments, and the reservation policy of the Govt. of India. No applicant from areas in and around Gangtok is eligible for hostel accommodation.
